About The Position

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications. Reactor Servicing is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineer Structural 5 to join our team. In this role, candidate will be expected to provide technical expertise in the planning, preparation, and execution of reactor servicing work. Candidate shall demonstrate a strong aptitude for quickly understanding complex mechanical and structural problems and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Additionally, candidate is expected to be a strategic thinker, contributing to the development of departmental goals related to processes and people.This position will be the organizational technical lead with a heavy focus on structural and lifting and handling.  Active engagement with the division and continuous evaluation of gaps in knowledge or skill that need developmentUnderstanding of Material workflow at NNS or expectation to gain proficiency within one year.  Drive material risk conversations for all programs, and engage as needed with the material process to track and understand where we have issues with material not progressing to schedule.  Independent SME level reviews of engineering analysis.  Expected to be proficient with required codes and design criteria to support this effort including AISC, CMAA-70/74, ASCE-7, RES-66, NAVSEA 7000 Manual etc.Expected to lead emergent deck plate issues for all fuel handling programs (A4W, A1B, VCS).  Has the ability to lead cross-functional teams Expected to support and/or lead E82 department training sessions as well as be an SME for training development, coordination and audit as requestedActive engagement with Project Engineer 5s on topics of risk, material, knowledge management, and emergent problemsAbility to detect technical weakness through sampling and drive appropriate improvement

Requirements

  • Bachelor?s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience; Master?s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • FEA experience – Proficient with FEA design, risks, ability to check analysis and drive improvement as required
  • Programs utilized include Siemens FEMAP, Siemens FLOEFD and RISA 3D

Nice To Haves

  • Facilities knowledge – Candidate will be expected to support any major Facilities impacts to E82 program work and support recovery efforts if issues arise
  • Knowledge of Concrete and various types foundation design
  • Knowledge of regional seismic design criteria
  • Experience with advanced FEA – Non-linear analysis, shock design, etc.

  • Good working relationship with Naval Nuclear Lab
