About The Position

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications. This position is for an engineer in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83) supporting the maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN68 Class aircraft carriers. The candidate will support various on-going efforts in the arena of static and dynamic analysis of steel structures, naval shock and vibration analysis as they relate to foundation design, shock and vibration qualification of equipment, carrier inactivation and disposal efforts as well as participate in the Department E83 digital initiatives efforts. The candidate should have experience in structural analysis with knowledge in AISC code, and experience with the capabilities of finite element analysis (FEA) computer applications (primarily NASTRAN, ABAQUS, and FEMAP). The position also requires experience in structural foundation drawings, the fabrication and welding of ship’s structure, and non-destructive test requirements for structural welds. Strong project management, communications, writing, and organizational skills are needed. The incumbent will have sound knowledge of engineering/design processes relating to ship systems and an understanding of ship construction processes, as well as have demonstrated the ability to work independently and in groups with only minimal oversight from management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • US Citizenship Required

Nice To Haves

  • BS in Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics is preferred.
  • Experience in structural analysis with knowledge in AISC code
