About The Position

The Submarine Engineering Advanced Capabilities team is looking for an Engineer Structural 2 to take part in the development of future submarines. This is an opportunity to join our growing team to contribute and influence the Navy's or our allies future, premier attack submarine. The selected engineer will go oversee several projects, as well as provide guidance and direction to the junior engineering staff. In addition, presentations to NNS senior leadership, Navy, government technical warrant holders and SME’s. Analyze, research, and develop structurally engineered products, typically involving metallic materials, for new ship construction or ship alterations for commissioned vessels. Specific structural applications may contain composite materials. Techniques include classical, closed-form solutions and finite element methods to solve static, dynamic, transient and shock loading scenarios. Additional analyses consist of damage tolerance, fatigue and thermal analysis. Resulting analytical requirements include allowed stress levels, structural displacement, structural stability, and factors of safety. Interfacing with other engineering disciplines is required to ensure whole-ship system integration as well as ensuring products meet survivability requirements. Common tools used are Femap/NASTRAN, Abaqus CAE, Microsoft Office suite, AutoCAD, Inventor, and Siemens PLM suite. The RoleAnalyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
