Engineer, Mechanical Component Engineering

Doosan CorpSouth Windsor, CT

About The Position

At HyAxiom, we develop, manufacture and service hydrogen fuel cells along with other innovative hydrogen energy solutions. We are a leading provider of stationary fuel cell solutions in some of the world’s largest and fastest-growing markets for utility, industrial and commercial customers. Being the hydrogen business pillar of Doosan Group, we share in their rich history as being a part of the oldest South Korean conglomerate operating in the global energy, manufacturing, and construction sector. Our products serve those who seek cleaner and more sustainable energy sources to lower their carbon footprint.   Our mission is to accelerate a carbon-free energy future by delivering a full spectrum of reliable and cost-effective hydrogen solutions. We seek to be at the forefront of the hydrogen revolution through the development of next-generation technologies for clean hydrogen production and clean fuel cell solutions for land and maritime transportation. Our current product line-up ranges from electrolyzers for scalable green hydrogen production and fuel cells for stationary and mobility applications.Job Information  Responsible for the selection and maintenance of mechanical components utilized within a fuel cell powerplant. The MBOP group (Mechanical Balance of Plant) is responsible for selecting fuel cell components that meet the requirements generated by the Systems group. Typical tasks include corresponding with and effectively collaborating with suppliers to enable selection of optimal hardware, generating component specifications from component level requirement documents, working with suppliers to develop custom components when necessary, generating component- level models, running performance tests (e.g. pump head vs. flow) and/or accelerated durability tests, and conducting component-level testing of new or refurbished parts prior to installation into the powerplant. Critical focus on troubleshooting component noncompliance issues discovered in the factory or in the field. Ongoing focus on employee and career development of self and others within the discipline. This role requires a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the discipline and the role, while continuing to develop specialized discipline knowledge. Works with moderate guidance on projects and more complex work assignments.

  • MS degree with 0-2+ years of experience.
  • Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or another related STEM discipline.
  • Has functional knowledge of the discipline and the role.
  • Knowledge of technical componentry parts and process engineering.
  • Ability to develop, maintain and grow effective supplier relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Results-driven.
  • Teamwork focused.
  • Effective computer and systems skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a manufacturing/factory environment preferred.
  • Heat exchanger experience.
  • Experience with electro-mechanical hardware such as pumps, valves and instrumentation.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communications.
  • Ability and experience to clearly understand and execute to meet customer requirements.
  • Ability (experience preferred) to work with a diverse group of technical and business focused individuals, internal groups and the external supply base, occasionally on a global basis.
  • Experience using AI tools to aid activities such as computational analyses and searching for design solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Focus technical skills of MBOP group on hardware selection, custom component determination, component modeling, building component test rigs and running performance tests, and troubleshooting.
  • Direct group’s focus with variance resolution on root cause analysis and ensure lessons learned are captured in process revision and standard work.
  • Proactively identify patterns in conflicting information and constructively resolve the conflict(s) in a manner that minimizes impact and rework.
  • With moderate guidance and direction, generate component specifications from component level requirement documents, and review with author(s) to modify as needed prior to formal pursuit.
  • Share component specifications with potential suppliers to identify suitable Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) component availability.
  • Use component specifications to enable suppliers to develop suitable components when COTS parts are not suitable.
  • Ensure new componentry has been validated and thoroughly documented prior to production release.
  • Assure utilization of root cause/corrective action techniques to generate consistently optimal problem resolution.
  • Set challenging but attainable technical goals for self, and track achievements, success and failures to develop and optimize individual and team performance.
  • As may be required, support the development of suppliers to enable them to meet technical, cost and delivery targets.
  • Work with supply chain to initiate, develop and execute component-related cost reductions.
  • Challenge the status quo of current hardware componentry, systems and practices to achieve continuous MBOP improvements.
  • Develop plans that support achievement of short and long-term business demands.
  • Stay abreast of all new and evolving, external MBOP-related processes, parts, materials and developments to assure Doosan remains elevated above its competition.
