About The Position

Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures. This position is intended for the Ford Class Carrier group in the Coatings Technology and Materials Engineering Department. The incumbent will perform engineering services and troubleshooting for surface preparation and coating applications at NNS and off-site. This position requires effective communication with internal and external customers (Trades, Navy, and Suppliers). The incumbent must be able and willing to work in an industrial environment and occasionally support off-shift and/or weekend duties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • -Experience with and detailed job knowledge of surface preparation and coating application technical requirements for Ford Class Carriers.
  • -Apply technical knowledge and production experience to support existing and future ship designs
  • -This position will directly support waterfront trade activities, candidate should be willing to split (50/50) between the office and outside jobsites in hot/cold weather and potentially dirty environments
  • -Comfort and willingness to operate in an industrial manufacturing environment
  • -Demonstrated ability to interface successfully with Customers and Suppliers, the Navy Technical Community, and NNS Production Team leadership.
