About The Position

The Electric Drive and Innovation Center (EDIC) exists to facilitate the development of innovative, robust drive systems for mining and construction equipment. The Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end process of component testing in the lab. This includes test stand design support, supplier interface, test stand preparation, troubleshooting, proper cabling and reporting on test results. This is an active and dynamic role with the employee spending approximately 60% of their time in interior and exterior test cells and about 40% of their time in an office setting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant discipline.
  • Min 5 years' experience designing and running test cells along with associated data collection and reports.
  • Experience using LabVIEW.
  • Experience using vibration equipment and interpreting vibration signatures.
  • Proficient in the use of CAD tools including 3D modeling.
  • Working knowledge of drafting standards including GD&T.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of basic manufacturing processes including hands on experience in welding and mechanical and electrical assembly.
  • Ability to interface with technical staff associated with suppliers for purchased components.
  • Strong attention to detail especially related to technical specifications and drawings.
  • Ability to facilitate and work well with team members in group problem solving sessions.
  • Occasional travel to conferences or other facilities may be required 2X per year on average.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience testing SR and/or AC 100+ hp motors.
  • Working knowledge of VFDs and other Motor Drives. Familiarity with the basic working components of those drives (i.e. IGBTs, Caps, CTs, Laminated Bus, Cold Plates).
  • Experience designing both water- and air-cooling systems.
  • Experience as a Manufacturing Engineer in a company that produces large electrical rotating equipment for the Mining or Locomotive industries.
  • Some experience auto mechanics or house remodeling.
  • Electrician's license.
  • Participation in implementing Lean Engineering principles.
  • Participation in effective Change Management implementation.
  • Exposure to cross-functional team assignments.
  • Professional registration and/or membership in committees and/or technical societies.

Responsibilities

  • Designs support for test stands for EDIC and facilitates set-up to ensure design meets test procedure requirements.
  • Interfaces with component suppliers and provides project management to ensure test stand is ready for scheduled component testing.
  • Troubleshoots test stand issues as required including issues related to alignment, vibration and cooling.
  • Sizes power cabling for electric motors and generators under test.
  • Conducts tests including data collection and preparing written reports.
  • Analytical - Synthesizes complex or diverse information. Collects and researches data. Uses experience to interpret data.
  • Design Validation-Defines tests and analyzes test data to ensure design meets expected performance requirements. Interfaces with engineering to review product testing results and to discuss potential design changes to address performance shortcomings.
  • Problem Solving - Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner. Gathers and analyzes information skillfully. Develops alternative solutions.
  • Project Management - Develops project plans and supports broader project planning. Communicates changes and progress. Completes projects on time.
  • Communication -Communicates effectively complex topics to peers and shop personnel.
  • Participates in programs for compliance with global standards for testing and safety of products and services, as well as lab best practices.
  • Participates in and supports improvements to streamline testing set up, processes and reports.
  • Participates in effective Change Management activities to achieve the desired organizational outcomes by successfully changing individual behaviors as needed.
