About The Position

The Engineer II serves on the On-Site Water Protection Team to support the review, evaluation, and oversight of subsurface wastewater systems across North Carolina. This role provides technical assistance and training to local health departments, applying engineering principles, data analysis, and regulatory knowledge to assist with system design reviews, inspections, compliance evaluations, and capacity building statewide. Work is performed independently and requires skilled professional engineering judgment. The position manages moderately complex projects and provides consultation on issues and requests from clients and higher-level professionals, ensuring alignment with standards, codes, and program needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; OR, An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying statutes, rules, and regulations governing permitting, construction, inspection, operation, and maintenance of onsite wastewater treatment and dispersal systems.
  • Proven experience assessing soils, geology, and hydrogeology related to installation of on-site wastewater systems.
  • Documented experience with wastewater treatment processes and decentralized technologies.
  • Experience collaborating with public health and environmental agencies to align responsibilities and compliance activities.
  • Demonstrated experience applying engineering concepts and technical practices and staying current on emerging developments and trends.
