The Geotechnical Engineering Unit collects and analyzes subsurface information and provides geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadways and structures. The Geotechnical Engineering Unit is looking for a Geotechnical Design Engineer in our Eastern Regional Office. In this role you will: •visit sites to observe existing conditions or subsurface investigation work. •evaluate and interpret subsurface conditions based on field and laboratory tests. •use engineering judgment and available resources to resolve geotechnical issues such as cut slope and embankment stability, ground conditioning or improvement, and foundation design. •communicate findings and present recommendations to more senior engineers and project teams. •prepare plan set details and project special provisions in order to implement recommendations during construction. •assist with review of consultant analysis and recommendations. Intermittent overnight travel will be required of this position. Applicant must be able to legally operate a State-owned vehicle to make site visits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of geotechnical engineering used to resolve geotechnical challenges related to foundations, vibration, slope stability, walls, temporary shoring, roadway subgrades, soft soils, and settlement.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform geotechnical analysis using engineering software and spreadsheets.
  • Demonstrated ability to write geotechnical recommendations for roadways, structures, and temporary shoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak and write technical information clearly and concisely to varied audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to review work done by others in accordance with applicable codes, design manuals, policy, and procedures.
