Job Description We anticipate an opening for one or more Engineer role for the Nuclear Plant in Welch, MN. The base rate of pay for this classification will be starts off at $48.37 hourly and can go up to $75.05 base off experience. The position will be posted for 10 Working Days from November 19, 2025 to December 4th, 2025. Xcel Energy is hiring a Nuclear Programs Engineer to be based out of the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant in Welch, Minnesota. The Nuclear Programs Engineer provides oversight and support to ensure that the plant meets industry standards and regulatory requirements, equipment is monitored, tested and maintained to ensure station reliability, procedures and processes are in place to manage the programs, and assessments are conducted to make improvements. Candidates with 2+ years of experience are preferred. Plant and nuclear programs or similar experience is preferred (including but not limited to: in-service testing and in-service inspection). The below description and requirements are for the Engineer II level within the Engineering hierarchy, however this position may be filled at a higher level, which may have additional requirements. The successful candidate will be placed at a level that is commensurate with the candidate's skills and experience. Summary This is a continuing development level for professional engineering work in a nuclear power generation environment. Typically performs engineer work at a competent level but works under some supervision on more complex aspects of functional assignments. The Engineer II outlines plan for design, development or implementation of specific projects assigned with minimal supervision. Competently performs routine engineering work requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria required to carry out a sequence of related engineering tasks. The Engineer II may be assigned tasks in one or more of the nuclear engineering disciplines (e.g. systems, design, programs, electrical, materials, civil/structural, nuclear fuels, procurement or regulatory affairs).

Requirements

  • Four year B.S. degree in engineering or a related technical field from an American Board of Engineering Technology (ABET) accredited college or university.
  • Engineer I = 0 years minimum experience
  • Engineer II = 2 years minimum experience
  • Engineer = 6 years minimum experience
  • Senior Engineer = 8 years minimum experience
  • A condition of employment will be successfully obtaining and maintaining General Security Clearance and a Nuclear Security Clearance for unescorted access to Xcel Energy nuclear plants including successful completion of nuclear General Access Training (GAT) and the nuclear security screening process (typically consists of an alcohol/drug screen, a criminal history check, a psychological assessment, initial credit and background investigation and periodic credit & criminal history checks).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous commercial power plant or nuclear experience
  • Familiar with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV) code
  • Familiar with Inservice Testing (IST) in the BPV code
  • Familiar with 10 CFR 50 Appendix J for containment leakage testing

Responsibilities

  • Using prescribed methods, performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.
  • Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results, and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes
  • Performs routine tasks designed to provide experience and familiarization with engineering staff, methods, practices and programs of Xcel Energy.
  • Assists with planning and design projects, provide technical support and guidance for design, construction and operations.
  • Work with Supervisor on assignments with unusual or difficult problems.
  • Receives close supervision on new aspects of assignments.
  • Prepares schedules and estimates for specific projects, may analyze reliability, system or program deficiencies.
  • May be involved with area teams to determine opportunities and set action plans.
  • Participates in planning, engineering and operational study teams or committees
  • Studies for and completes nuclear training and qualifications.
