About The Position

Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems. The SSN(X) Platform Mechanical team is seeking creative, motivated, and technically strong engineers to join our diverse, dynamic and dedicated team of engineers. As a member of our team you’ll have the once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape critical functions and novel capabilities for the Navy’s next generation fast attack submarine. The mechanical team is responsible for the concept design, development, and execution of complex mechanical systems across the non-propulsion areas of the submarine, including payload launch and recovery, control surfaces, HVAC, chill water, masts, and many others. You will team with the Navy and industry to develop these systems, molding what will become the world’s most advanced and capable submarine.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice To Haves

An understanding of how mechanical systems interface with structures, electrical, and other mechanical systems
An understanding of an array of mechanical products, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, mechanical joints, and others
Experience in traditional and computer-based methodologies for the design and analysis of components
The ability to work in and help foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of team members and stakeholders
Exhibit a strong desire for continuous learning and development in a dynamic environment
Operational experience on commissioned or under construction Navy vessels is a plus

Responsibilities

Provide technical support for key mechanical systems on the submarine
Develop and mature innovative new design concepts considering functional requirements, future technologies, operational needs, construction and lessons from legacy systems
Develop and review technical calculations, reports, presentations and other products
Coordinate with Navy counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the Navy and working groups
Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities
