About The Position

This role is responsible for supporting the development of our Spirio player piano system and other music technology products and will collaborate with the product development, software development, engineering, and manufacturing teams at Steinway.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical and/or mechanical engineering required; Masters preferred
  • 5+ years of work experience doing hands-on development of electromechanical products, including digital, analog, and power circuit design, PCB design, and the design of mechanical assemblies.
  • Engineering fundamentals: statics, material science, solid mechanics, statistical tolerance analysis
  • Strong experience with project management and scheduling tools.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Knowledge of basic manufacturing processes such as machining, casting, sheet metal forming, injection molding, etc.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling software
  • Experience drafting and interpreting engineering drawings

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with embedded software development and FPGAs a plus
  • Prior woodworking experience would be a plus
  • Understanding of closed-loop servomechanisms and solenoid design a plus.
  • Knowledge of the process and requirements for filing patent applications
  • Some musical training and an appreciation for fine piano music would be ideal

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and enhance Spirio, our solenoid-based player piano system
  • Focus on electromechanical engineering design processes for enhancements and revisions
  • Develop piano related electro-mechanical hardware in conjunction with the Spirio Technical Manager and Piano engineering team
  • Troubleshoot and maintain Spirio bugs or issues as they may arise
  • Work with suppliers and procurement team to ensure procurement and availability of necessary parts
  • Interface with and negotiate with suppliers while exercising sound engineering judgment
  • Continuing R & D for hardware in ongoing music technology products in development
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineering to develop a variety of parts, assemblies, tools and fixtures used in piano manufacturing
  • Support other music technology initiatives as assigned
