About The Position

Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. This position is for an Electrical Engineer 2 and is intended for the Systems and Integration group in Department E50 (formerly known as E70). The department supports the GERALD R. FORD Class Aircraft Carrier and is designated as the design agent for the propulsion plant. The incumbent will be responsible for designing and managing the Regulating Valve Controllers and Gate Valve Actuator Controllers on Ford-class ships as well as providing assistance with the RC Door Actuators and Pressurizer Heater system. As the Design Agent for this equipment, the selected candidate will be expected to become the subject matter expert and understand both the components and the systems associated with their equipment. This position regularly communicates with the Navy, Department Leads, Supply Chain, Vendors, NNL, Engineers/Designers across various Departments, Waterfront, and NAVSEA via email, phone, and in person meetings and utilizes letters, memos, and various other communication methods to formally document communications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting Navy/DoD programs, preferably Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, that includes interfacing with NAVSEA and its prime contractors, equipment suppliers, and shipyard trades and engineering
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with end-user support and troubleshooting
  • Experience working with suppliers on product development and improvement
  • Conceptual design knowledge of valve controllers
  • Demonstrate basic engineering project management skills
  • Ability to proactively identify and resolve technical design issues
  • Familiarity with IEEE standards
  • Experience with PLC programming and embedded systems software
  • Ability to read, analyze and design electrical schematics
