What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity? At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients. Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible. The Engineer 1 role in Fluidic Systems is part of the Illumina product development team creating new industry-leading genetic analysis platforms for life sciences and clinical markets. You will work in a very interdisciplinary team environment to develop industry-leading genetic analysis instrumentation and device products. Primary responsibilities of this position include design and evaluation of fluidic and microfluidic devices and components in both instruments and consumables, functional spec characterization as it pertains to system-level performance and workflows, critical parameter studies to drive high reliability and robustness, and failure analysis to root cause, mitigation, and permanent correction. You will be responsible for supporting the design, test, and manufacturing transfer of fluidic components, consumables and sub-systems, with a hands-on approach to troubleshooting. This candidate should possess strong organizational and communication skills to facilitate successful product development across instrument, consumables, chemistry, and software teams.

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Systems Engineering, Applied Physics or related field
  • 0-2 years hands-on experience in an R&D laboratory or equivalent
  • Knowledge of basic fluid dynamic principles as it pertains to laminar flow / microfluidic systems.
  • Hands-on lab experience designing and executing breadboard systems to characterize fluidic performance.
  • Experience with experimental design and execution, including DOEs and root cause analysis.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data analysis programs (JMP, MATLAB, Microsoft Excel) is a plus.
  • Experience with programming languages (Python, LabView, C++, etc.) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively across disciplines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication/presentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in microbiology or biochemistry labs is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, setup and perform fluidic experiments in the lab.
  • Conduct analyses including flow parameter characterization and tolerance analyses to drive specifications of fluidic components and protocols.
  • Design and implement testbeds for the characterization and life testing of fluidic components and sub-systems.
  • Design and execute experimental evaluations (i.e. DOEs) and author test plans to verify critical specifications.
  • Program and debug fluidic instrumentation.
  • Assemble and perform metrology on prototype consumables.
  • Assemble, maintain and debug test setups.
  • Analyze and present test results using statistical analysis tools for data analysis and visualization.
  • Perform failure analysis and issue triage of fluidic sub-systems in all phases of product development.
  • Be a self-starter, analytically oriented, with a hands-on approach to design, testing and troubleshooting.
  • Work independently and within multi-disciplinarily project teams.
