Career Level: P3 Primary Purpose: Designs and optimizes architecture components for energy management systems, ensuring seamless integration of applications and real-time data to enhance grid performance and compliance with operational standards.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a 4 year degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Typically requires 5 years of related experience.
  • Power System Operations and Control - Understanding of transmission, generation, and distribution systems, including load flow, contingency analysis, and voltage control principles.
  • Energy Management System Applications - Knowledge of core EMS functions such as state estimation, automatic generation control, and network modeling.
  • System Integration Standards - Familiarity with protocols and standards like IEC 61850, ICCP (Inter-Control Center Protocol), and cybersecurity frameworks for utility systems.
  • Enterprise Architecture Principles - Understanding of architecture frameworks, scalability, interoperability, and alignment with organizational standards.
  • Regulatory and Compliance Requirements - Awareness of industry standards such as NERC reliability requirements and cybersecurity mandates for critical infrastructure.
  • System Design and Specification Development - Ability to create detailed architecture diagrams, technical specifications, and integration plans for EMS components.
  • Real-Time Data Integration - Skill in configuring telemetry systems and integrating operational data for monitoring and control functions.
  • Performance Analysis and Optimization - Proficiency in using simulation tools and analytics to evaluate system performance and recommend improvements.
  • Problem Solving in Complex Technical Environments - Ability to troubleshoot integration issues across applications, databases, and network systems under time-sensitive conditions.
  • Collaboration and Communication - Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, explain technical concepts clearly, and influence decisions related to architecture design and implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Designs architecture components for energy management systems to optimize grid reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Develops detailed software design specifications for applications such as load forecasting and voltage control.
  • Evaluates compatibility of hardware, databases, and applications to ensure seamless integration.
  • Implements real-time data acquisition from supervisory control systems for performance monitoring.
  • Collaborates with operations and planning teams to align architecture with regulatory and reliability standards.
  • Troubleshoots complex integration issues involving network communication and data synchronization.
  • Researches emerging technologies such as advanced analytics and distributed energy resource integration.
  • Provides technical guidance to junior engineers on architecture development and configuration practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
