BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION: The P SF FORECASTING Department of the P INTEGRATED GRID PLANNING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. This position may be filled on Oahu, Maui, or Hawaii Island. (Role: Professional) This posting seeks to fill at either the Energy Forecaster or Senior Energy Forecaster; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.  ENERGY FORECASTER JOB FUNCTION: Participates in the energy planning and analytics efforts related to the development of the energy and demand forecasts for Oahu, Hawaii Island and Maui County grids to support strategic and operational planning initiatives. Provides technical support with expanded assignments in the Company's corporate planning initiatives and policies.  SENIOR ENERGY FORECASTER JOB FUNCTION: Leads the energy planning and analyses efforts related to the development of the energy and demand forecasts for Oahu, Hawaii Island and Maui County grids to support strategic and operational planning initiatives. Spearhead technical assignments and support in the Company’s corporate planning initiatives and policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative analytical discipline such as physical sciences, engineering, data science, mathematics, statistics, economics, finance or equivalent experience may be considered. Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of utility economic analysis methods including, but not limited to, derivation of financial parameters, calculation of revenue requirements, and the ability to perform various economic analyses.
  • Working knowledge of trends in customer behavior and market conditions in the electric utility industry. Has a good understanding of factors that influence customer usage across different customer segments.
  • Thorough knowledge of utility economic analysis, rates and tariffs, scenario planning, clean energy corporate goals and existing and initiatives.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state, and regulations related to corporate initiatives and governing the adoption of customer-sited equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and cost analysis as they apply to basic power system analysis, customer-site renewable, energy efficient and emerging technologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of statistical analysis methods (e.g., regression, ARIMA, descriptive and inferential statistics, etc.).
  • Thorough knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as, spreadsheets, data management, presentations, statistical modeling, and word processing.
  • Thorough knowledge of the regulatory structure of the energy industry in Hawaii.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization, consultants, vendors, industry experts, government, and the public.
  • Adaptable and able to schedule work responsibilities to accomplish several tasks simultaneously and to set priorities to meet numerous and conflicting deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, conceptual, and problem-solving skills to handle various complex projects and programs.
  • Superior attention to detail in analytical assessments; thrives on developing and maintaining high quality reports and assessments and considers effects of decision in upstream or downstream information flows.
  • Ability to apply technical concepts and methodologies in developing forecasts and analyses; ability to keep regulatory quality documentation of study/projects, and complete tasks accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to synthesize/integrate important information from large volumes of data; offer solutions and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, planning and time management skills to handle multiple projects and programs at the same time.
  • Multiple (5-7) year’s experience with quantitative analysis, statistical forecasting, or predictive modeling. Experience may be substituted for an advanced degree.
  • Advanced degree (Master’s) in a quantitative analytical discipline such as engineering, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, economics, or finance. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Extensive knowledge of utility economic analysis methods including, but not limited to, derivation of financial parameters, calculation of revenue requirements, and the ability to perform various economic analyses.
  • Thorough knowledge of the regulatory structure of the energy industry in Hawaii and the participating parties/stakeholders and their responsibilities.
  • Extensive knowledge of utility economic analysis, rates and tariffs, scenario planning, clean energy corporate goals and existing and initiatives.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state rules, and regulations governing customer-sited equipment.
  • Extensive (8+) year’s experience in more than one of the following areas related to energy or demand forecasting, data analytics, planning, or economics.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and teach novel concepts to team members and supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, designs, and provides substantive direction for developing the energy and demand forecast and planning initiatives that support strategic areas of focus for the Company.
  • Develops load forecasts to support generation, transmission and distribution planning.
  • Independently carries out complex assignments resulting in the development of new or improved techniques, procedures, and risk assessment.
  • Plans, designs, develops, specifies, and coordinates analysis surrounding changes in the structure of the energy industry and anticipates resulting impacts on the Company's systems from external demand and supply side technologies.
  • Identifies the need for and designs, coordinates, and implements, studies to support models and framework for forecasting consumer demand, sales, and revenue.
  • Performs hindsight metrics of forecast performance and makes recommendations to improve overall forecasting capabilities.
  • Provides training as appropriate.
  • Manages and coordinates planning work with operations, planning, finance, and other areas of the Companies.
  • Creates, develops, and/or delivers expert testimony, responses to informational requests, and other assignments supporting rate case and resource planning projects before various external agencies such as the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, Public Advisory Groups, and various community groups.
  • Assists with negotiations among the parties in the proceedings if settlement is a desired outcome.
  • Develops, modifies, tests, implements, documents, and operates complex technical statistical/scientific/engineering algorithms supporting energy and demand modeling including load profiles by end use, class of service, system, or other defined user segments.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
  • Assigns, directs, and reviews work assignments of other forecasters in developing and carrying out forecasts using quantitative analysis.
  • Actively identifies and leads continuous improvement efforts.
  • Investigates collaboration opportunities for external vendor and stakeholder engagements.
  • Provides coaching to other team members to develop technical and professional capabilities.
  • Assists Manager with setting direction for department goals and initiatives.
