About The Position

Smith Engineering is seeking an Energy/Field Engineer to join our team in the New York Metro area. You will split your time between our Manhattan office and various customer sites, with a heavy emphasis on on-site field operations (approximately 90% of the role). At Smith Engineering, our vision is to create a sustainable future by improving operations and increasing efficiency in critical facilities. For more than a dozen years, we have been a leader in central plant design and optimization, building a reputation for discovering and solving facility mysteries and improving central plant operations. Our design, energy, controls, and workforce training teams offer a joined-up service to industry-leading clients in the metro region and beyond. Your Role: We are seeking a high-energy, hands-on Energy/Field Engineer to serve as the "boots on the ground" for our most complex energy optimization projects. Working directly with our Senior Engineers, you will be the primary lead for field data collection and system checkouts within complex central plant environments. This is a role for an engineer who thrives in the field, isn't afraid to get their hands dirty, and prefers the "drama" of a mechanical room over a desk in an office. You will be "drinking from a fire hose" as you learn the nuances of large-scale building systems, with the clear goal of developing into a future leader and engineering consultant within the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (SUNY Maritime graduates are highly encouraged to apply), followed by 0–3 years of experience in the building energy or HVAC industry; we are willing to train the right entry-level candidate who demonstrates high "hustle" and technical curiosity.
  • Hands-on Aptitude: A genuine love for working with your hands and a "blue-collar" work ethic.
  • Physical Discipline: Must be comfortable in a physically demanding plant environment, capable of navigating mechanical rooms, and willing to travel between sites throughout the city daily.
  • Academic Discipline: A proven track record of diligence and reliability (the "go-to-class" mentality).
  • Communication Skills: An extroverted personality who is comfortable meeting new people and presenting observations to internal senior staff.
  • Must be located within 50 miles of New York City and be comfortable with 90% field-based work.

Responsibilities

  • Field Testing and Data Collection: Perform physical checkouts of building subsystems, including sticking probes and meters into ducts and pipes to measure temperature, pressure, and flow.
  • System Performance Evaluation: Assist in redefining "as-intended" performance standards for complex facilities and conduct testing to ensure systems meet these new efficiency benchmarks.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Diligently fill out testing forms, collect equipment data, and maintain organized logs of field observations for the senior engineering team.
  • Logistics and Coordination: Manage the transport, delivery, and setup of specialized testing equipment at various customer sites across the NYC metro area.
  • On-Site Client Relations: Interact professionally with Chief Engineers, facility managers, and contractors while working at command centers and mechanical plants.
  • Cross-Functional Learning: Collaborate with the design and energy teams to translate field findings into long-term energy conservation measures (ECMs).

Benefits

  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Fertility, adoption, and surrogacy reimbursements.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Medical flexible spending account (FSA).
  • Transit and parking accounts.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Flexible Paid Time Off.
