About The Position

An experienced professional who evaluates the health and safety, durability, comfort, and energy use of residential buildings. The EA conducts advanced diagnostic tests, gathers and analyzes data, and creates energy models to develop recommendations for energy efficiency improvements in accordance with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) guidelines. This role is responsible for performing comprehensive home energy assessments to identify cost-effective measures under the DOE Weatherization Assistance Program. The Energy Auditor ensures full compliance with federal, state, and agency requirements while working closely with contractors, Quality Control Inspectors (QCI), and program staff to deliver high-quality, cost-effective weatherization services to clients.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, building science, environmental studies, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in residential construction, HVAC, weatherization, energy efficiency, or related fields.
  • DOE-approved Energy Auditor certification (BPI EA, HEP Energy Auditor, or equivalent).
  • BPI Building Analyst and/or Envelope Professional.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Strong knowledge of building science principles, energy efficiency measures, and residential construction practices.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic testing equipment and audit software.
  • Ability to interpret program regulations and technical standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to serving low-income populations and addressing energy burden.
  • Proficiency with software platforms such as Microsoft Office, Google Sites, EmpowOR, ProntoForms, and scheduling tools like TimeTap
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people at all levels inside and outside the company..
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with stakeholders including contractors.
  • Strong organizational skills, problem solving and attention to detail.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Ability to work in various indoor and outdoor environments including basements.
  • Comfortable performing physical tasks as required.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines and often changing priorities.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills consistent with the ability to identify key issues from a broad range of alternatives, and recommend optimal solutions for various situations.
  • Ability to work with a variety of people and groups to achieve effective and efficient results.
  • Ability to attend external events during and outside of normal work hours.
  • A clean driving record is required to meet agency requirements for operating an agency vehicle to complete work-related tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct energy audits on residential dwellings using DOE-approved tools, software, and diagnostic equipment (e.g., blower door, combustion analyzer, infrared camera).
  • Collect field data to assess energy usage, building conditions, and health and safety risks.
  • Develop work scopes based on audit results, ensuring measures align with DOE standards, ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation requirements, and cost-effectiveness tests (SIR).
  • Explain audit results, proposed measures, and health and safety findings to clients in a clear and professional manner.
  • Collaborate with contractors, crew members, and Quality Control Inspectors (QCI) to ensure accurate implementation of work scopes.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation in client files, databases, and state reporting systems.
  • Participate in training, certification, and professional development to maintain DOE-approved Energy Auditor credentials.
  • Assist in pre-inspections, in-progress monitoring, and support post-inspection when needed.
  • Follow all health, safety, and program compliance protocols.
  • Address homeowner concerns and ensure a positive client experience throughout the process.
  • Stay up to date on industry standards, program requirements, and advancements in energy efficiency and weatherization techniques.
  • Perform work in a professional manner that upholds Wayne Metro’s policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards assigned work, clients, and staff, and a willingness to work with others.
  • Other duties as assigned.
