About The Position

Under direction of the Department of Fire and Rescue Services and ranking Beach Patrol Officials, provides pre-hospital care for various medical emergencies within the scope of practice of a New Jersey certified EMT.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles of emergency medical care; the use and practice of pulmonary and cardiac resuscitation; the administration of oxygen; appropriate emergency treatment based on the patient’s condition; and the priorities to be observed in patient care.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position; remain calm in crisis situations; establish rapport with patients; learn to utilize various electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the City; and safely operate an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) as required for beach patrol operations.
  • A valid driver’s license is required and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a Valid NJ EMT and/or National Registry EMT-B card with previously established NJ affiliation AND Possession of a valid BLS Health Care Provider Card issued by the American Heart Association.
  • This position requires that the employee be self-motivated as well as the ability to follow direct and standing orders.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of outside EMS experience preferred.
  • American Heart Association CPR Instructor certification is a plus.
  • Previous EPCR training a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Determines the nature and extent of an injury or illness and established priorities for emergency care.
  • Based on assessment and findings, renders emergency medical care to medical and trauma patients.
  • Performs first aid; administers oxygen; uses life-saving medical equipment, such as airway adjuncts and automated external defibrillator; performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation; assists patients with the administration of physician prescribed medications; and assists with preparing patients for transport.
  • Teaches and refreshes the lifeguards in basic first aid and CPR; maintains the cleanliness of First Aid Stations wherever located; completes and maintains files, records, and reports; performs other related duties as assigned.
