About The Position

Provides direct services to primary and secondary survivors of sexual violence and survivors of domestic violence by offering support and advocacy through each stage of the healing process. Will work to educate and engage the community in an effort to further prevent sexual violence. The Advocate provides trauma-informed emotional and practical support, information, advocacy, and court accompaniment to survivors of domestic violence, including assistance with personal protection order, civil and criminal hearings, and legal referrals. The Advocate is not a lawyer and does not give legal advice.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and homelessness.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with diverse populations (ie: elderly, ethnicity, gay/lesbian, differently abled, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to support goals described in the mission, vision statements & strategic planning of Caring Connection.
  • Knowledge of local resources, agencies, and services.
  • Demonstrate clear written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a crisis-oriented organization.
  • Ability to prioritize.
  • Understanding of confidentiality practices.
  • Willingness to provide emergency response services at local hospitals and law enforcement agencies.
  • Minimum of one-year college enrolled in Human Services field of study
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment with both internal and external partners.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office and web-based programs.
  • Valid Driver’s License, a working motor vehicle, and proof of current vehicle insurance.
  • Undergo and successfully pass a State of Michigan LIEN Check and Central Registry Clearance.
  • Undergo a background check with no recent felony convictions and no abuse/neglect convictions.
  • Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings, weekends and holidays, as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to crisis calls within established policies and procedures.
  • Will respond to crisis calls at all three Berrien County hospitals as well as law enforcement calls.
  • Ensure proper coverage for the sexual assault and domestic violence crisis line.
  • Provide support for survivors via deep and reflective listening.
  • Support and accompany victims to forensic exams and/or law enforcement interviews
  • Advocate for victims and survivors with public agencies or forums (i.e.: law enforcement, medical/social/legal systems, legislative efforts, etc.).
  • Facilitate support groups.
  • Assistance in filing reparations claims and other related documents.
  • Assist clients in safety planning, identifying options, housing search, and problem-solving.
  • Assist clients in filling out personal protection order paperwork, filing, and attending court hearings.
  • Accompany clients to family court hearings and other hearings as required.
  • Provide referrals as necessary to other service providers.
  • Follows all VOCA grant goals, objectives and outcomes.
  • Completes all VOCA required electronic reports within seven (7) days of calendar month end.
  • Attend trainings and continuing education activities as assigned.
  • Active participation in weekly team meetings about client needs, scheduling, and other team issues.
  • Must be able to maintain professional boundaries.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
