Emergency Room Companion, On Call
About The Position
The Adrian Dominican Sisters are seeking an on call Emergency Room Companion to join their Pastoral Care team. This team provides support services to the Sisters in the Dominican Life Center, a Continuum of Care Retirement Community located on the Motherhouse campus in Adrian, Michigan. In this role, the Emergency Room Companion escorts Sisters to the ER after hours when needed. The companion is on call from 5:00pm to 8:30am Monday through Sunday every week to respond to emergency room visits. Companions provide transportation and companionship to Sisters during emergency room stays and communicate with the staff on campus as necessary. Fleet vehicles are provided for this role.
Requirements
- High School Diploma
- Well developed communication and listening skills.
- Experience with, and ability to be present, supportive and compassionate to all Sisters, especially those living with dementia and memory loss.
- Emotionally and spiritually mature.
- Must be able to exercise patience and empathy.
- Must have a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record and be able to drive when necessary.
- Must be able to respond to calls and arrive on the ADS campus within 30 minutes.
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
- Be able to assist Sisters in and out of fleet vehicles and buildings as necessary.
- Be sighted and able to hear well.
- Be able to lift as least 45 pounds.
- Must be capable and comfortable driving at night.
- Annual influenza vaccination is required for this position.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with medical terminology is preferred.
- Nursing Assistant experience a plus.
Responsibilities
- Escort Sisters to Emergency Room or meet the ambulance there to stay with Sister until hospital admittance or return home.
- Provide companionship and comfort at all times during ER stay.
- Driving vehicles during the day and night in all weather conditions.
- Accompanies Sisters who are transferred from one ER to another.
- Communicates professionally with Adrian Dominican Sisters staff via phone or text regarding Sisters' conditions.
- Responds appropriately to safety hazards and/or emergencies following written campus procedures. Complies with all safety policies and procedures for health and safety of Sisters and co-workers while performing duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
