About The Position

The Maryland Emergency Medical Services (EMS) System is a coordinated statewide network that includes volunteer and career EMS clinicians, medical and nursing personnel, communications, transportation systems, trauma and specialty care centers and emergency departments. The Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) oversees and coordinates all components of the statewide EMS system in accordance with Maryland statute and regulation. This includes planning, operations, evaluation, and research. MIEMSS provides leadership and medical direction, conducts and supports EMS educational programs, operates and maintains a statewide communications system, designates trauma and specialty centers, licenses and regulates commercial ambulance services, and participates in EMS-related public education and prevention programs. MIEMSS is seeking an EMS Communications Operator Lead. This position is open to current employees of Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) only GRADE 13 LOCATION OF POSITION 653 W. Pratt Street Baltimore, Maryland 21201 POSITION DUTIES The ideal candidate for this position will provide EMS communications services to EMS field and hospital personnel. Coordinate medevac helicopter activity by assisting in the dispatching of the appropriate aircraft and monitoring flights for safety. Notify receiving facilities and agencies of transports and flights. Supervise EMS Communications Officers (EMSCO). This position may function as the Director during his or her absence. Assist in administrative activities as required. Position Duties include but are not limited to: Answering telephone and radio calls from EMS personnel requiring communications with hospitals or the services of medevac helicopters Verifying helicopter requests are within protocol and assists in the dispatch of appropriate aircraft. Monitoring helicopter tracking system, weather condition reports, and other tools necessary for flight safety. Monitoring hospital status and operates CHATS program to notify effected EMS providers. Completing written and electronic records to document EMS communications activity and helicopter operations. Monitoring performance of EMS communications equipment and reports faults to appropriate repair service. Assigning tasks and providing direction to EMSCOs Checking work and performing Quality Management of EMSCOs. Assisting the Director of EMRC/SYSCOM in administrative tasks as assigned. Providing training and mentoring to EMSCOs. Maintaining shift schedule and leave. Approving Workday submissions for EMSCOs (assigned team members.) Completing Performance Evaluations for assigned team members

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of experience at an Emergency Communication System as an operator or from the field as a pre-hospital clinician. This experience can include experience working as a licensed Emergency Medical Technician (or above) or Emergency Medical Dispatcher.
  • Candidates may substitute additional experience in an emergency communication system receiving, relaying and dispatching information on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Emergency Communications or Management classifications or Emergency Communications or Management specialty codes in the Emergency Management field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be contacted.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  • Preferred certification for candidates applying for positions in this classification is an Emergency Medical Technician certificate or above.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
