About The Position

The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) provides direct patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN) or a designated healthcare professional. This role operates in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, and adheres to the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Bon Secours Mercy Health. Key responsibilities include basic patient care, vital sign measurement, personal care, assisting with mobility, performing lab draws, ECGs, and basic wound care. The EDT also acts as a liaison between patients and nurses, provides high-level customer service, and ensures accurate documentation. The position requires the ability to work independently, problem-solve, and manage conflict under stress, while maintaining knowledge of relevant policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification for Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Medical Assisting
  • Previous experience working as a Patient Care Tech, within a nursing support role or previous healthcare experience or second year nursing student from a Registered Nurse (RN) program

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic patient care and comfort.
  • Measure vital signs.
  • Assist with personal care and hygiene.
  • Assist with patient mobility.
  • Perform lab draws.
  • Perform ECGs.
  • Provide basic wound care.
  • Perform other unit-based specialty duties under the direction of an RN.
  • Complete patient rounding as assigned.
  • Provide 1:1 patient safety companion service as needed.
  • Act as liaison between patient and nurse to report changes and concerns.
  • Provide high level customer service to all patients, patient's families, community providers, visitors, and employees.
  • Provide accurate, precise, timely documentation as applicable to patient care.
  • Participate in handoff report of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs upon arrival and when leaving.
  • Perform delegated tasks once competency has been validated.
  • Collect data, within scope.
  • Complete patient screenings as applicable.
  • Promote quality and safety by seeking to continually improve the processes and systems to enhance patient care delivery.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently, problem solve, and be able to resolve conflict while working under considerable stress.
  • Maintain knowledge of policies and procedures.
  • Monitor patient conditions during treatment.
  • Inform medical professional regarding patient conditions and care.
  • Record patients’ medical history.
  • Perform CPR.
  • Perform Straight Urine Catheterization.
  • Perform Ear Irrigation.
  • Perform Patient positioning.
  • Perform Patient transport.
  • Perform Phlebotomy.
  • Perform EKG.
  • Perform Splinting.
