The Safety team at Discord ensures users find belonging by minimizing exposure to spam and other forms of platform abuse. As the Embedded Data Specialist, you will be a trusted locus of data knowledge by stakeholders, capable of fielding requests from diverse groups of stakeholders. You balance emergent requests with creating more longterm tooling, and are conscious of the maintenance investments of the tools you build, with coaching. You expect QA of your code, but very rarely would corrections be approach-based, rather than accidents of function.
Requirements
- Fluent SQL, BigQuery dialect preferred
- Experience updating data architecture in version control systems such as Git
- Data Reporting experience, with an understanding of new feature design and guardrails
- Statistical analysis training
- Can determine path for code/data review with limited direction
- Maintain high levels of confidentiality and accuracy while performing legal requests
- Beyond just fielding requests, able to discuss data availability and limitations to help craft a request with a stakeholder
- Excellent written communication and documentation skills
- Ability to foster relationships and communicate complex concepts to stakeholders
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently, but oversight and coaching is expected
- Familiarity with Claude Code and leveraging AI tools to expand impact
Responsibilities
- Analyzing data to uncover patterns, insights, and trends, as well as answering complex legal and comms based Safety questions for external communication
- Leveraging analysis to design operational response solutions in the Safety landscape
- Writing retros of Safety incidents with a focus on guardrail solutions and clear runbooks
- Iterating, improving, and socializing reporting to the needs of an emergent safety landscape across teams and efforts with a focus on stable or self-help solutions
- Delivering long-term project work in the Safety operations landscape with some oversight
- Documenting — in detail — your work, its impact, and the guardrails present in your design
- Assisting in developing scalable, clean data infrastructure
- Partnering with teams across Safety to increase the impact of your work
