About The Position

The mission of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless is to work collaboratively toward the prevention of homelessness and the creation of lasting solutions for homeless and at-risk families, children, and individuals throughout Colorado. The Coalition advocates for and provides a continuum of housing and a variety of services to improve the health, well-being, and stability of those it serves. This position provides support relating to acquiring benefits such as personal identification information, state disability fund, Medicaid health insurance, Medicare health insurance, food assistance, SSA etc. Additionally, the Benefits Specialist is responsible for assisting with disability student loan forgiveness, divorce application forms and referrals, accessing online tax programs, birth certificates, Social Security cards, child support referrals, and stimulus benefits. NOTE: In order to ensure that our consumers receive the best possible care the candidate chosen to fill this position will be required to complete our internal credentialing and privileging process prior to a start date. The credentialing and privileging timeline is dependent on the selected candidate's submission of documents necessary for clearance. Please note that a start date will be scheduled once credentialing and privileging is complete.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling or similar field preferred.
  • Understanding of issues related to homelessness including common physical & mental health conditions, recovery-oriented, evidence-based interventions, complexities within provided services, and trauma-informed care.
  • Collaborates cross-departmentally with Coalition staff to grow & contribute to the success of program objectives, culture, & a positive working environment.
  • Ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships that motivate, guide, and/or reinforce the performance of others toward goal accomplishments.
  • Approaches tasks with thoroughness and consistency and holds value for precision and thoughtful review of work to ensure strong outcomes.
  • Must be able to communicate information clearly and effectively through multiple mediums to diverse audiences.
  • Must be able to remain calm, think clearly, and apply sound judgement in high-pressure situations.
  • Must be able to access and interpret information from computer screens and printed materials.
  • Valid driver’s license required. This requirement may be waived, if necessary, based on overall candidate experience and current needs of the business.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts initial benefits assessment of new residents to determine needs (i.e., food stamps, housing, Social Security, unemployment).
  • Applies regulations and work procedures to verify and determine benefits and eligibility for public assistance programs and referrals for social services.
  • Helps clients understand and fill out forms and processes required paperwork.
  • Assists residents with ongoing benefits related care needs.
  • Evaluates residents benefit needs through regular contact.
  • Provides transportation for clients as necessary for benefit-related appointments.
  • Ensure timely & accurate use of all company systems as required while maintaining complete up-to-date records and any future upgrades as directed.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.
