About The Position

Harrison Township School District (PK-6), in Gloucester County has an opening for a Full-time, Tenure Track Elementary School Nurse. Qualifications: State of New Jersey School Nurse Certificate (minimum of Substitute; Standard preferred) The school nurse is a health service specialist who assists pupils and staff in attaining and/or maintaining optimum health and promotes positive health habits and attitudes. The School Nurse's primary responsibility is to develop and maintain a comprehensive health program. The three components addressed by the school health program are: school health services, a healthful school environment, and health education. The School Nurse works under the direction of the School Physician. While the position of school nurse requires considerable independence and professional judgement, it also requires an effective and cooperative relationship with related professional disciplines and the total school staff.

Responsibilities

  • Consults with the Superintendent to establish, review, and revise policies and procedures relating to the school health program.
  • Provides the Superintendent and Principal a monthly report relating to the activities of the Health Office.
  • Submits all reports required under Title 18A, by State Health Codes, County Health Department, etc.
  • Confers with the Principal regarding meeting the objectives of the school health program.
  • Advises the Principal when concerns are identified relating to health and/or safety.
  • Participates in the annual Kindergarten Registration.
  • Maintains a daily log of Health Office activities.
  • Helps promote the routine practice and evaluation of periodic emergency drills such as bus evacuation and fire drills.
  • Collaborates in assessing and improving the social and emotional climate of the school and promotes an awareness of the influence of curriculum, policies, activities, communications, and stress levels on the mental health of students and personnel.
  • Aids in the interpretation of the dress code, attendance policy, etc.
  • Observes and recommends the exclusion of students who show evidence of communicable diseases.
  • Assists in planning Health Office budget.
  • Maintains Health Office records as required.
  • Shares knowledge relating to students who have been identified or who are at risk of developing physical and/or psychological problems.
  • Helps to modify the school environment to meet the needs of students requiring special services.
  • Maintains appropriate communication with the Child Study Team.
  • Provides classroom instruction when that need has been identified.
  • Serves as a resource person.
  • Serves as a member of curriculum committees relating to Health or Family Life.
  • Arranges in-service programs for school personnel regarding health issues.
  • Maintains employee health records, including those relating to Mantoux testing.
  • Determines training of Health Office aides, orientation, and supervision needed to comply with the State Nurse Practice Act and other legal considerations.
  • Communicate with parents regarding health screenings/ assessments and their outcomes as appropriate.
  • Help parents understand that primary responsibility for student health care rests with them; help them assume this responsibility through education and referral to community agencies, etc.
  • Serve as a link or mediator between home and school when physical and/or psychological problems threaten to inhibit the learning process.
  • Strives to develop and maintain an open and caring relationship with all students since the School Nurse is one of the few persons who is a constant in the student's school experience.
  • Arranges for, conducts, or assists with required screenings, records these findings, and makes referrals when necessary: a. Physical examinations b. Vision and hearing screenings c. Scoliosis evaluation d. Blood pressure monitoring e. Growth (height and weight)
  • Administers prescribed medications, per Board Policy 6:9.
  • Provides first aid and temporary care for injured and ill students.
  • Reviews and maintains immunization records; makes referrals when indicated.
