About The Position

We have an opening for an Electronics Technologist/Senior Electronics Technologist . You will provide technical support for Target Diagnostic Engineering and Science technical staff, working with experimental and prototype electronic and photonic systems at the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science Directorate. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate. You will provide technical support in a research environment and NIF Operations. NIF is the world’s most powerful and energetic laser that is a 24/7 operational facility and may occasionally require on call, overtime, shift, and/or weekend work to accomplish goals. You will test and maintain experimental research and prototype equipment associated with electronics, computers or electro-optic systems. You will help solve complex technical problems through regular interactions with co-workers and supervisor. The position will be filled at either the 531.2 or 531.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in electronics engineering technology or the equivalent combination of education and prior technical related experience.
  • Intermediate experience in electronic troubleshooting and assembly, including fault diagnosis, reading schematics, using test equipment, and assembling or repairing electronic circuits.
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering hardware testing equipment, processes, computer aided design and electronics simulation software.
  • Intermediate skills, knowledge, and understanding of moderately complex electronic circuits and systems including assembly, fabrication, testing, maintenance, and repair functions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, and presentation skills sufficient to develop and report data, and to work successfully with multidisciplinary teams in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Experience in safe work and business practices.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. in a safe and controlled manner.
  • Advanced understanding and experience in complex electronics and/or photonics technology including a background in both theory and design.
  • Ability to establish and modify specifications by applying electronic knowledge across a wide range of electronic circuits and systems.
  • Advanced technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve complex problems, while gathering and analyzing associated data while working under minimal supervision.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, feedback and presentation skills sufficient to develop and report data, and to work successfully with multidisciplinary teams in a highly collaborative environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology or related technical field.
  • Experience with operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electronics and/or photonics systems.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and resolve moderately complex technical problems with electronic circuits, subsystems, and systems.
  • Provide general technical support by diagnosing, debugging, testing, evaluating, designing, upgrading, maintaining, and repairing electronics systems, instrumentation, controls, data acquisition systems, and test equipment, including electronics fabrication.
  • Interpret and work from sketches, drawings, schematics, and verbal or written instructions to troubleshoot and resolve problems at the system, sub system, or component level.
  • Provide general technical support to engineering tests, physics experiments, and program operations using appropriate test methods and equipment.
  • Identify and acquire moderately complex data and test results to report findings, identify problems, and analysis utilizing advanced methods.
  • Develop and modify basic test procedures, determine circuit requirements, and contribute to preliminary design concepts and engineering decisions.
  • Develop, update, and utilize instructional guides for the repair, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment and systems.
  • Provide routine maintenance and related assigned tasks to ensure the reliable and safe operation of equipment and facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Establish circuit or systems parameters using advanced electronics circuitry, scientific knowledge, engineering principles, and mathematical calculations.
  • Interpret specifications used in crafting, maintaining, and calibrating complex electronic systems, chassis, or components.
  • Independently with minimal instruction deploy, fabricate, troubleshoot, assemble, and disassemble complex electronic and/or photonics components and systems, including planning and selecting materials, equipment, and methods.
  • Independently with minimal instruction identify, analyze, and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex electronic and/or photonics problems using individual creativity and judgment; prioritize and provide work and technical support to others checking for accuracy, completeness, and function.
  • Assist in developing advanced test parameters, troubleshooting and testing materials, components, or systems, identifying problems, and providing input on solutions.
