About The Position

The Electronics Specialist I performs journeyman-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, trouble-shooting, fabrication and preventive maintenance involving commercial-level electronics work. This position will also involve blue staking, identifying and marking utilities, specifically fiber optic, so there is no risk of damage during excavation, trenching, or digging activities. Must have the ability to review drawings or prints and mark out utilities accordingly. This position requires the ability to maneuver a 75-pound manhole cover using proper equipment. This position is required to work rotating on-call shifts.

Requirements

  • Completion of an industry-recognized apprenticeship program in the electronics trade AND one year of relevant journeyman-level experience. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)
  • Two years with Pima County in a Trades Maintenance Specialist II or closely related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • Ability to obtain jail pass is required.
  • Post offer physical required.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum two (2) years experience utilizing underground locating equipment.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience with interior and exterior installation for both fiber and copper cabling.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience in fiber and copper termination including installation of patch cabling at switch equipment.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience utilizing test/certification equipment for both fiber and copper cabling.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience with the installation of all types of cabling using NFPA 70 national electrical standards.
  • Minimum two (2) years testing or certifying all types of cabling including coax and Ethernet cabling.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled analysis, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of electronic systems, controls, instrumentation, and related equipment
  • Performs quality control testing and diagnostic analysis to ensure proper system functionality and makes corrective adjustments as needed
  • Fabricates, modifies, or installs electronic equipment and system components from verbal instructions, sketches, plans, or technical drawings
  • Prepares estimates for repair, maintenance, or special projects based on sketches, plans, and engineering specifications
  • Prepares sketches, diagrams, and documentation to support work performed or proposed
  • Maintains detailed records of activities, services, repairs, and usage of supported equipment and systems
  • Inspects and maintains assigned tools, test equipment, and vehicles to ensure operational readiness
  • Coordinates work activities with other divisions, agencies, or contractors to optimize resources and minimize service disruptions
  • Monitors and evaluates contractor performance and compliance with standards and specifications
  • Trains and assists employees in safe and proper methods of electronic systems maintenance and repair
  • Stores, handles, and disposes of hazardous materials in compliance with safety regulations and maintains required protective equipment
  • Maintains security and accountability for tools, equipment, and materials, particularly in sensitive or restricted settings
