About The Position

Job Summary The Chemistry Department is seeking an Electronic Technician to support the teaching and research missions of the College of Science. Reporting to the Director of Resources and Operations and receiving work lead direction from the Chair of the Chemistry Department, this position works independently to design, fabricate, maintain, repair, and install sophisticated scientific instrumentation. The incumbent collaborates with faculty, department chairs, and staff across the college to ensure specialized equipment is operating safely and effectively, supporting instructional laboratories, research programs, and compliance with university safety standards. Key Responsibilities Design, fabricate, install, maintain, and repair complex electronic and scientific instrumentation used in teaching and research laboratories Service and maintain advanced analytical equipment such as NMR, GC, GC-MS, FTIR, UV-VIS spectrometers, X-ray diffractometers, centrifuges, and related systems Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and provide training on the safe use of specialized equipment Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and perform preventative maintenance and system upgrades Maintain safety records and ensure compliance with university safety and chemical safety requirements Manage inventory of spare parts, tools, and test equipment; work with vendors on quotes and procurement Collaborate with faculty and staff to support instructional and research needs across the College of Science Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner Ability to use good judgement judgment with regard to technical decisions, estimates of need, allocation of resources, scheduling of service Ability to troubleshoot instrument problems. The incumbent also will be expected to take the initiative to learn how to operate and repair unique, complex and specialized devices Thorough knowledge of electrical diagnostic equipment with high and low shock hazards Ability to understand the basic concepts of chemistry, physics and mathematics, and have knowledge and experience in digital electronics, specifically with respect to logic trouble-shooting, system design software programming and hardware. Ability to train and supervise others, including student assistants if needed Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position Working knowledge of software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, and database management Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies Performs duties under all safety and environmental regulations, rules, policies and guidelines Recommends initiatives and changes to improve quality and services Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training a performance initiatives. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow Prepares progress reports, informs supervisor of project status and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in a diverse multicultural environment

Requirements

  • Equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned, including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment or equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related equipment experience as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience or equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience

  • Experience working with/repairing gas chromatographs, NMRs, FT-IRs, mass spectrometers, vacuum equipment and/or other chemistry instrumentation
