About The Position

Georgetown University’s Planning and Facilities Management team is responsible and committed to providing the community services related to campus planning and design, capital projects, custodial, facility maintenance, grounds and landscaping, sustainability, transportation and parking, and utilities. We strive to provide our clients with professional and timely services with sustainable practices integrated into our operations. The Electrician performs building trades work in maintaining electrical systems, fixtures and related components as part of the services provided by the facilities management department to maintain University buildings. Services include all standard electrician work. Performs journey level maintenance and repairs in accordance with industry/trade practices. Provide daily maintenance support to building users involving responses to calls for service, scheduled preventative maintenance and unscheduled or special work when assigned to zone office. Workers use all standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade and observe all safety rules, codes, regulations and precautions in performing their duties. The Electrician supports the operations of a 24/ building maintenance and response team to provide coverage and emergency response. They perform work on A/C and heating repairs, ventilating and pumping equipment; repair and troubleshoot all plumbing repairs (e.g., fire alarms, lock outs electrical outages, water main breaks, building floods). Reporting to the Supervisor of the Maintenance Shop, the Electrician has significant duties that include but are not limited to:

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent
  • Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training in the electrician trade
  • Must have a current journeyman electrical license for the District of Columbia
  • Incumbent is subject to random and for cause drug and alcohol testing
  • Must possess valid DC, VA or MD driver’s license
  • 4 to 5 years of experience performing general building maintenance work utilizing intermediate electrical, plumbing and HVAC /refrigeration skill
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in building automation controls with strong background in Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems and computer controls
  • Ability to inspect, adjust, calibrate and install pneumatic and mechanical devices
  • Knowledge and experience with using associated test instruments and diagnostic tools
  • Ability to use computers and related technology efficiently, with a range of skills covering levels from elementary use to programming and advanced problem solving

Nice To Haves

  • Journeyman’s license in the heating/ventilating and air conditioning and refrigeration, plumbing or electrical trade
  • Master mechanic, journeyman plumber, or journeyman electrician designation preferred

Responsibilities

  • Installs and repairs systems to provide exact temperature levels in special conditions
  • Determines the size, shape, and the location of close fitting ducts and installs or plans the installation of them so that the heat and exhaust is directed outside the test chamber or refrigeration unit without affecting the critical conditions of the unit
  • Serves as an industrial refrigeration and air conditioning equipment mechanic, performing preventative maintenance inspections, major overhauls, installations and emergency repairs to ventilating fans, steam operated commercial kitchen equipment, and air conditioning and refrigeration equipment
  • Examines complex air conditioning systems in order to troubleshoot, locate, and repair faulty equipment such as compressors, reciprocating, centrifugal, or rotary pump, and a variety of refrigerant controls. Uses a variety of complicated motor controls such as hermetically sealed motors and pressure controls, thermostatic motor controls (remote and double remote), full and semi-automatic defrosting controls, relays, direct digital controls, and other controls to protect against overload or overheating
  • Independently modifies and repairs plumbing systems, such as utility, supply, and disposal systems
  • Tests and makes needed adjustments to systems and equipment for proper operation, flow, drainage, and sanitary conditions
  • Works from clear-cut oral or written instructions, blueprints, schematics, drawings, sketches made; the layout and placement of circuitry, fixtures, and controls; and the types of wiring, parts, and equipment installed; and removes, replaces, tightens, splices, solders and insulates defective wiring, controls, equipment and fixtures
  • Locates defective parts/equipment through visual observation or through the use of test equipment; and performs basic installation or repair of electrical equipment incident to the construction or maintenance of buildings or facilities
  • Installs or repairs equipment such as motors, generators, converters, inverters, alternators, transformers, controllers, power panels, breaker boxes, and switchboards; and assists with the installation of different types of power transforming equipment
  • Locates broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment
  • Uses a small variety of test equipment, such as test lamps, voltage testers, ammeters, and polarity testers
  • Ensures that serviced equipment is installed, operated and maintained in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations; and notes and reports any inappropriate installations.
  • Ensures efficient and economic use of supplies and materials to conserve University resources
  • The duties include driving a university vehicle. If hired, the Maintenance Mechanic III must qualify as a university authorized driver
