About The Position

Since the late 1800's, the Transtar companies consist of a group of rail carriers have been an important component in this country's industrial development. Moving billions of tons of raw materials to manufacturing sites. Transporting finished products to market. Storing and handling bulk commodities. Providing rail transport services to hundreds of satisfied customers throughout the nation's industrial heartland.The Locomotive Electrician is a Maintenance of Equipment, Locomotive Department position of the Gary Railway Company of Transtar LLC. The Locomotive Electrician is responsible for the inspection and repair of electrical wiring components on locomotives, machinery, buildings, miscellaneous equipment, and appliances in field and shop environments.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Trade school or formal electrical maintenance training required.
  • Journeyman Electrician or four (4) years Locomotive electrical maintenance work experience or related education is required.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call is required.
  • One year of outdoor and industrial work experience is preferred.
  • Ability to climb is required.
  • Working at heights is required.
  • Performing manual labor and lifting in excess of 50 pounds is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Locomotive diesel electrical training preferred.
  • Print reading experience preferred.
  • Troubleshooting experience preferred.
  • Computer skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receives instructions regarding work to be done.
  • Determines materials and required tools.
  • Performs inspection utilizing meters, analyzed trouble areas and makes repairs as required.
  • Performs necessary electrical tests, removes, disassembles, replaces, repairs, modifies, rebuilds, assembles, adjusts, and maintains batteries and all electrical equipment or components on locomotives, road maintenance equipment, lighting circuits, crane circuits, air compressors, building and shop facilities, and equipment.
  • Perform incidental heating and burning.
  • Duties may also include working on railroad signal systems, which may require the ability to perform strenuous work using hand tools, (such as pick and shovel) in the construction, wiring and troubleshooting of railroad signal and crossing systems.
