About The Position

The Electrician is responsible for electrical maintenance and installation at the Culinary Institute of America (“CIA”). This includes, but is not limited to; replacing lightbulbs, performing LED conversions, installing/replacing electrical, repairing kitchen appliances, replacing electrical breakers, responding to power outages, performing general preventative maintenance (PM) work and inspections, responding to radio requests and emergencies and completing electronic work orders as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Formal trade school education in electricity or related field and a minimum four (4) years’ experience in the electrical trades under a licensed electrician.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to read and understand blueprints, wiring diagrams and technical operating manuals.
  • Must be experienced with hand tools, meters, installation and replacement of lighting fixtures and lamps, and troubleshooting electrical circuit problems.
  • Some experience with both low and high voltage equipment and systems.
  • Must have the ability to work with heavy rolls of cables, conduit and to carry ladders and other heavy supplies and equipment, in addition, have the dexterity to maneuver in small spaces.
  • Must be able to work from high places; on ladders, near the edge of roofs and other locations that present risks in a safe manner, following all constraints both formal and informal including OSHA and CIA and other applicable rules, protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment; must be able to work on own under the general direction of the Chief Electrician or the supervisor on duty.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and conceptual skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Must be able to supply the initial set of hand tools and meter.
  • Must be able to supply initial pair of safety toe work shoe/boot.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a commercial kitchen or equivalent industrial equipment environment.
  • Experience working with low voltage controls and/or experience with high voltage systems, up to 480V.
  • Completed a formal apprenticeship, lasting four (4) years or have a similar number of years of experience working as an electrician under the supervision of a master electrician.
  • Certifications in mechanical lift operations (scissor and boom).
  • Certified in OSHA 10 or higher.
  • Knowledge of control wiring and systems, alarms, HVAC wiring and variable frequency drives (VFD).
  • Demonstrated experience working with and knowledge of high voltage, emergency generators, and energy management systems.
  • Hands on experience with kitchen appliances and/or other industrial equipment.
  • Knowledge of automotive and/or small engine repair is a plus.
  • Experience or understanding of other supporting trades such as HVAC or building controls.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the installation, preventative maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and diagnosis of all electrical and electric related equipment, which includes, but is not limited to lighting fixtures, electrical devices, breakers, electric heat, gas detection devices, electrical panels and kitchen appliances.
  • Conducts facility inspections (rounds) as required, inspecting equipment and systems for proper operation.
  • Utilize tablet-based interface to generate, assign and close out work orders through the Institute’s work order system.
  • Follows blueprints, specifications, manufacturers literature as directed.
  • Interacts in a positive, professional and helpful manner with all campus stakeholders, including students, chefs, faculty, staff, outside vendors and campus guests.
  • Communicates safety information and other information proactively to the right people and works to make sure that key people know about safety issues and important concerns in a timely and clear manner.
  • Coordinates and conducts work in a way to minimize disruption to classes and other campus activities.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all campus electrical systems and kitchen equipment as required.
  • Understands and follows all codes and safety practices required by the CIA or governing agencies.
  • Proactively advises supervisor of restocking needs for supplies and performs periodic campus-wide quality inspections and develops work orders as needed.
  • Assists outside contractors and accompany them as needed. Reviews their work to ensure work is being completed safely and professionally.
  • May be required to assist with emergencies, special event set-ups and breakdowns, which may be assigned after normal business hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Assists Facilities managers and supervisors and others as assigned, with general projects and maintenance work in support of supporting trades and contractors at the Hyde Park campus.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.
