About The Position

Obsidian Labs, the advanced research, prototyping, and rapid experimentation arm of Obsidian Solutions Group, is seeking a highly capable Electrical Engineer to support the design, development, integration, and testing of next-generation hardware systems. This role supports multi-domain R&D initiatives including human–machine interfaces (HMI), wearable and distributed sensing systems, radiation and CBRN detection, autonomous platforms, and advanced manufacturing prototypes. The Electrical Engineer will work in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment alongside mechanical engineers, software developers, systems engineers, and subject-matter experts to transition concepts from whiteboard to field-ready prototypes. This role directly supports internal R&D, SBIR/OTA programs, customer-funded prototypes, and demonstration systems across defense, homeland security, and emerging technology markets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in electrical design, embedded systems, or hardware development.
  • Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, KiCad, Eagle, or equivalent).
  • Experience working with microcontrollers, sensors, and embedded peripherals.
  • Ability to work effectively in a rapid-iteration, prototype-driven environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with wearable electronics, HMI devices, or distributed sensor systems.
  • Familiarity with radiation detection, CBRN sensors, or environmental monitoring systems.
  • Experience supporting SBIR/OTA or government R&D programs.
  • Knowledge of RF systems, GPS/PNT, or wireless communications (BLE, Wi-Fi, LTE, mesh).
  • Exposure to MIL-STD-810, EMI/EMC standards, or ruggedized system design.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary R&D or startup-style lab environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and document electrical architectures for prototype and low-rate production systems.
  • Create schematics, wiring diagrams, and PCB layouts for analog, digital, and mixed-signal systems.
  • Select components (MCUs, sensors, power systems, RF modules, interfaces) optimized for SWaP-constrained applications.
  • Support rapid iteration cycles from concept through prototype fabrication and test.
  • Collaborate with software and firmware teams to enable reliable data acquisition and system control.
  • Design and analyze power architectures including battery systems, power management ICs, and charging circuits.
  • Support EMI/EMC mitigation strategies and grounding/shielding best practices.
  • Assist with environmental robustness considerations aligned with operational use cases.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering on electro-mechanical integration and packaging.
  • Support design-for-manufacturability and design-for-test considerations.
  • Participate in hands-on lab build, integration, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Develop and execute bench-level and system-level test plans.
  • Support laboratory validation, field testing, and demonstration events.
  • Support transition of prototypes toward production or customer handoff.
