About The Position

City Utilities (CU) has been connecting the community to essential services since 1945, including electricity, clean water, natural gas, internet, and transit. This Electric Substation Intern position is designed for training and education, assisting in the construction and maintenance of de-energized overhead and underground equipment in electric substation facilities. The role requires working between 20-25 hours per week during school semesters and 40 hours per week during summer, not to exceed 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and graduate students in at least 6 credit hours each semester. Applicants must have completed at least one year of college and be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program. The internship concludes within three months after graduation. Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Must be pursuing an associate’s degree in Electrical Distribution Systems or related field at an accredited technical college.
  • Must have a valid Missouri Class A Commercial Driver’s License or obtain one before employment.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and make mature decisions with or without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work courteously with customers and coworkers.
  • Ability to show good judgment.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment associated with substation construction and maintenance.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow standard CU safety procedures and practices.
  • Ability to effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems.
  • Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.
  • Maintain adherence to all company policies.
  • Students who have completed at least one year of college and are enrolled as a full-time student may apply.
  • Must be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program.
  • Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
  • Subject to Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
  • Required to wear uniform clothing provided by City Utilities, including flame retardant/arc rated clothing.
  • Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of and in conjunction with other employees, assist with substation equipment maintenance and operations, while learning the basic tools and practices used for electric substation maintenance and construction.
  • Perform routine or emergency repairs and maintenance on electric substation facilities and equipment as assigned.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work environment and prevent fire hazards and other hazards associated with de-energized electric substation activities. Work safely and encourage safe work by others according to CU’s policies and standards.
  • Perform other duties as required by management.
