About The Position

As the Electric Power Generation Engineer, supporting our active contract with the U.S. Navy in the Washington, DC area, you will s upport and be an integral part of the design and development of the COLUMBIA Class submarine's IPS (Integrated Power System) electrical system. Bring your expertise and collaborative skills to make an impact towards our military defense and safety of our sailors. The NAVSEA 05Z5 Directorate is responsible for the design and development of the COLUMBIA class Integrated Power System that provides power distribution and propulsion for the future ballistic missile submarines, and the design of a new turbine generator to generate all electrical power. They work with directly with the shipbuilder for identifying, assembling, managing, directing, and coordinating all resources required for the design, construction, and Test and Evaluation (T&E) of the future submarine’s power system. They are also responsible for all of the Turbine Generators for generating electricity for all submarine and CVNs. The future Ballistic Missile Submarine is the nation’s top defense priority as the only survivable leg of the nuclear triad. Requirements

  • A current or active Secret clearance.
  • US Citizenship
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical (preferred), Mechanical, Computer, or other engineering degree or related field (Physics, for example). NAVSEA or submarine experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirements.
  • 5 years of experience.
  • 3 years of experience in the design of military or commercial power generation systems or similar/related experience.
  • Ability to be articulate in both oral and written formats.
  • Ability to use the Microsoft Office Suite of programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to provide rigorous, responsive, technical acumen while retaining a collaborative and amiable approach.
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years of experience in the maintenance, operation and issue resolution of power generation systems.
  • 3 years of experience with magnetic bearings as applied to power generation systems
  • Naval Nuclear Propulsion experience on VIRGINA class submarines, at a Prototype or Nuclear shipyard.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement electrical power generation systems including specifications and operational requirements.
  • Develop and integrate the control systems for all power generation components.
  • Design and develop Turbine Generators, with an emphasis on the generator end.
  • Design and integrate control systems for the Turbine Generator.
  • Collaborate closely with Naval Reactors, PMS 397, the shipbuilder, and component vendors to define and meet detailed design requirements.
  • Ensure all production units meet established design criteria and maintain the highest quality standards.
