The EKG Tech is responsible for producing recordings of electromotive variations in a patient's heart muscle using an electrocardiogram (EKG) to provide data for the diagnosis of heart ailments. This role involves clearly explaining testing procedures to patients, accurately fastening electrode leads, and monitoring EKGs for abnormal patterns. The technician must check for patient allergies to adhesive materials and observe skin reactions post-procedure. Key duties include attaching Holter monitors, assisting with exercise tolerance tests, and preparing patients and clinic areas. Administrative tasks are also a significant part of the role, such as answering telephones, greeting visitors, scheduling appointments, managing correspondence, and preparing patient charts. The EKG Tech is also responsible for obtaining precertification for echocardiograms, maintaining office files, inputting patient information into the EKG management system, editing and forwarding test results, and processing charges for both in-patient and out-patient electrocardiograms. The position requires operating and performing routine maintenance on EKG equipment, Holter monitors, blood pressure monitors, and other related devices, as well as managing office supplies and adhering to safety precautions.
