About The Position

The Early Head Start Mentor/Coach is responsible for providing ongoing mentoring/coaching for classroom teachers to support high quality adult child interactions and teaching practices. The EHSM/C will provide individual and classroom mentoring/coaching using effective practice-based strategies to support teachers’ continual professional development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or child development.
  • Five years of recent work-related experience in early care and education programs working in classrooms with children ages 0 – 3 and their families.
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development.
  • Experience with building relationships with staff toward a unified goal of high-quality early education.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse communities and families with the ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate.
  • Understanding of various child development assessment and screening instruments.
  • Understanding of various teaching and classroom quality assessment screening instruments.
  • Understanding of adult learning styles.
  • Understanding and use of the principles and practices of the ECE field, including reflective practice and practice-based coaching.

Responsibilities

  • Provides mentoring/coaching and technical assistance to classroom teachers, using reflective practice, Group Coaching (TLC), and practice-based coaching (PBC) techniques.
  • Identifies and develops training content for TLCs based on data collected through staff feedback, CLASS observations, SmartTeach documentation, ITERS results and other data related to staff development needs and goals.
  • Works collaboratively with EHS Directors and Child Development Specialists to support quality improvement efforts in each classroom.
  • Implements the PBC Framework including focused observations, facilitated discussions, classroom modeling, and providing strengths-based and constructive feedback to teachers participating in coaching.
  • Provide support and training regarding effective learning environments for children.
  • Builds and sustains/maintains trusting relationships and open communication with teachers, Child Development Specialists and Director.
  • Prepares for on-site visits with appropriate materials and resources.
  • Becomes familiar with and utilizes CLASS, ITERS 3 tool and MFN’s L&L Strategies to support identified goals and action plans.
  • Documents all mentoring/coaching activities and provides written feedback to classroom teachers, their supervisors, and applicable MFN staff as appropriate maintaining appropriate confidentiality within applicable timelines.
  • Is familiar with and uses data in SmartTeach and GoEngage.
  • Completes CLASS and ITERS 3 as assigned.
  • Collaborates in the development and implementation of training for center staff as assigned.
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of quality practices in the field of Early Childhood Education.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and maintains applicable certifications in current coaching and professional development practices.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and experience working with special populations or children in different learning environments, including children with disabilities, children who are dual language learners and/or children who are homeless or involved in the child welfare system for the purpose of providing guidance to staff on best practices.
  • Attends staff meetings, trainings, and other meetings as required and participates in required activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
