About The Position

TransAlta operates and maintains 6 Power Stations in Western Australia. With a nearly 30-year history in the Western Australia, we provide safe, clean and reliable power to large mining and industrial customers and have invested significantly in stable, long-term contracts. Reporting to the Group Manager, Finance and Business Services, this role is all about providing strong safety leadership. You will lead our Health & Safety team, working closely with our Operations and Project teams to deliver safety outcomes and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. You’ll ensure effective incident and injury management, emergency response, while driving a strong focus on safety culture, leadership, continuous improvement, and personal safety interventions. This is a Perth based role with travel to our site locations when required.

Requirements

  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field as an equivalent.
  • More than ten years’ experience in large organisations with safety or related responsibilities
  • A combination of demonstrated H&S technical experience, corporate strategy and leadership of teams
  • Ability to act as a “trusted partner” able to influence managers, supervisors, contracting organisations and workers
  • Ability to operate with a level of autonomy in leading self and team to plan, implement and evaluate HSE projects and processes
  • Ability to make decisions and judgments impartially based on standards, legislative requirements, Health and Safety knowledge and practice
  • Ability to act as an effective communicator able to communicate and liaise internally, with industry partners and regulators.
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a valid Police Clearance, complete successful background checks and undertake a pre-employment medical.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Health and Safety team to ensure the effective delivery of support to Projects and Operations.
  • Ensure that a proactive approach is taken to the prioritisation of support activities.
  • Manage our Emergency Management Response Plans, including the periodic review, implementation, and identification of improvement opportunities.
  • Lead, plan, implement and support management practices and projects aimed at achieving an organisational culture focused on Target Zero.
  • Manage the safety team’s provision of incident investigation support to the business.
  • Manage our Health and Safety Management System in the workplace, in accordance with established regulatory requirements, as well as TransAlta policies and guidelines
  • Provide oversight and direction to ensure operational activities are compliant with regulations, guidelines, procedures and industry standards.  This requires inspections, evaluations, risk assessments and the development of procedures to ensure the hazards associated with these activities are controlled
  • Solid understanding and ability to drive behaviour-based safety that supports a 24/7 safety culture at all levels while fostering an employee-driven safety ownership program and culture
  • Evaluate practices, procedures and assess risk and adherence to the law; review and update policies as necessary to ensure compliance
  • Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and incident prevention
  • Monitor current and future legal and other requirements applicable within operations and planned operational changes or new equipment/processes. Ensure potential impacts and controls are communicated to operational management
  • Provide support to ensure incident investigations are effective to discover root causes and ensure appropriate actions are identified, implemented and monitored
  • Define, drive and report on health and safety goals, actions, awareness, issues and statistics
  • Represent the Company working closely with regulatory agencies, community groups and other interested parties related to health and safety matters.
  • Manage department activities through effective planning, staff training, time management, scheduling and reviews.
