About The Position

The EHS Director is accountable for providing strategic leadership, direction, and guidance on both internal and external Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance within their designated area of responsibility. Maintains high visibility for EHS across all Corporate functions. Monitors and evaluates Organization’s EHS performance and implements appropriate changes in the area of responsibility to drive continual improvement into all EHS functions. Plans EHS performance strategy and resource needs and executes those plans. Director leads EHS programs and directs activities of site EHS personnel in maintaining and managing EHS. Director is responsible for tracking key EHS metrics and comprehensively reporting status to top management and other key stakeholders. Director provides expert technical assistance on critical issues related to Responsible Care, including occupational safety, industrial hygiene, fire protection/prevention, process safety management, environmental compliance (covering air emissions, water discharges, and waste disposal), Environmental Social Governance (ESG), product safety, security, and medical surveillance. Director is responsible for developing, managing, and enforcing company policies and procedures regarding environmental, safety, security, transportation safety, emergency planning and response and health programs. Director is accountable for maintaining current and up to date knowledge of Federal, State, Provincial, local, and other environmental, safety, security, and health statutes and regulations that can impact company operations and applying them to EHS programs. Director is responsible for ensuring manufacturing sites, offices and support centers of her or his area of responsibility meet or exceed these requirements and expectations.

Requirements

  • 4 Year Bachelor's degree in ES&H or a related field (Chemical or Health & Safety degree desirable). Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of related safety management, environmental and/or supervisory responsibility preferably in chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of US EHS regulations, management systems, regulatory agencies, trends and resources.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to interact and influence with all levels of site personnel.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc…) and extensive Internet search capabilities.
  • Ability to develop budget plans and forecasts.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills. Ability to build consensus and influence others.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills are essential.
  • Highly motivated and results-oriented.
  • Exceptional organization and presentation skills. Ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel (30-50%).

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications in environmental, safety, or industrial hygiene beneficial (e.g. Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Responsible Care and other EHS Management Systems.
  • Familiarity with ANSI, API, NFPA and other recognized industry standards.
  • Knowledge of worker’s compensation and medical surveillance requirements.
  • Enhanced level of knowledge on OSHA Process Safety Management requirements.
  • Training or knowledge of Emergency Response procedures (e.g., Incident Command, Haz-Mat, confined space or elevated work rescue, etc.).
  • Knowledge of databases and ability to use databases/AI for trending.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees EHS Managers and EHS Business partners to ensure manufacturing locations, offices and support centers in her or his area of responsibility are in compliance with applicable Federal, State, Provincial, local, and other environmental, safety, security, and health statutes and regulations that can impact company operations. These programs include, but are not limited to: Responsible Care, environmental, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, product safety, emergency response, loss prevention, process safety, security and medical surveillance.
  • Leads or supports development and maintenance of Chemtrade Global Documents.
  • Track and report on status of EHS goals by monitoring status of incidents, action items, MOC requests, compliance calendar tasks and nonconformance reports.
  • Conduct reviews and audits of company operations to evaluate implementation of Responsible Care, environmental, safety, health and security programs.
  • Participate in incident investigations and hazard reviews as needed to determine level of compliance.
  • Monitor interactions with regulatory authorities, insurance carriers or EHS consultants on issues impacting company operations.
  • Ensure environmental permits and reporting are up to date.
  • Manage EHS budget and justify any variances to the Vice President RC.
  • Review and process invoices.
  • Review and approve Capital Appropriations Requests in her or his area of responsibility to ensure Responsible Care, environmental, safety, health and security impacts have been evaluated.
  • Review citations/fines imposed by regulatory agencies and develop recommendations to minimize impact.
  • Monitor environmental, safety, health and security regulations for potential impacts to company operations. Implement compliance plans when required.
  • Develop, implement, maintain and enforce Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS), and Responsible Care policies and procedures that impact operations.
  • Ensure these policies and procedures are consistently and aggressively applied throughout her or his area of responsibility.
  • Ensure hazard communication standards and other key aspects of product and non-product safety information and safety data sheets (SDS) are current.
  • Other duties as assigned necessary to support achievement of company goals and objectives.
  • Communicates and leads by example the Chemtrade values and culture.
