About The Position

Charles R. Drew University is located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of south Los Angeles and was founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising. CDU was founded to address inadequate medical care in the region and to provide equitable medical education opportunities for under-represented students. CDU offers the only historically black Doctor of Medicine program west of the Mississippi, and is strongly invested in the local and regional community. The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to provide equitable healthcare resources in a variety of south Los Angeles neighborhoods. Reporting to the Senior Director for Academic Computing, the Educational Technology Supervisor leads the planning, operation, and support of campus learning environments, instructional systems, and AV services. This role oversees technology across classrooms, conference rooms, teaching labs, and public computing spaces, and manages system administration for cloud‑based instructional tools, including Blackboard and integrated digital learning systems. The Supervisor collaborates with instructional support staff to develop and deliver faculty and student training, supervises Educational Technology Specialists, and serves as the technical expert for AV and classroom systems—primarily Crestron. The position also guides the design, implementation, and ongoing improvement of campuswide educational technology systems, ensuring alignment with current and emerging learning technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required (Master’s degree in related education or technology preferred)
  • At least five years’ experience in direct, hands-on management of learning environments (classrooms, labs, online) in academic settings.
  • Familiar with current technology tools, services, and systems that have applications both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Experience administering an LMS (preferably Blackboard) and other online learning systems preferred.
  • Experience providing technical support for audio-visual technology.
  • Demonstrated skills working with the SaaS systems, APIs, LTIs and general knowledge of data systems preferred.
  • Ability to create and maintain positive and supportive relationships with faculty and administration.
  • Well-developed analytical skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn new applications and to communicate methods of use to others.
  • Excellent project management skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively selects trains, manages and leads subordinates.
  • Manage employees by establishing annual performance standards, goals, continuous training, allocating resources, assessing annual performance, and determining individual merit and/or promotion increases.
  • Ensures learning environments are maintained, operational, and that faculty and students have appropriate training in their use.
  • Collaboratively specifies, plans, designs, procures and manages installation of new classroom and AV systems.
  • Performs client-side application administration for cloud-based learning systems utilized by the University (Blackboard; Crestron XiO; Panopto and others).
  • Provides escalated technical support services for educational systems, AV, and classroom technologies/systems.
  • Works collaboratively with faculty and academic leadership on developing and implementing engaging learning environments that enhance the teaching and learning experiences.
  • Evaluates usage and appropriateness of deployed technologies and services, and uses data to guide planning.
  • Cultivates an environment that encourages creative and independent use of educational technology.
  • Participates in appropriate training and professional development on an ongoing basis to maintain and improve knowledge and skills.
  • Assists in development, implementation, and enforcement of policies and procedures regarding learning environments and systems.
  • Researches, evaluates, and monitors data, technology trends, new educational tools and frameworks (adaptive learning, active learning, learning analytics), software applications, devices, and emerging computing and educational technologies to assess their value to CDU’s educational mission.
  • Develops and maintains web-based resources and documentation to enable faculty, students and staff to use technology resources effectively.
  • Develops and conducts workshops and individual training.
  • Maintains a precise inventory and thorough records for computers, hardware, software, licensing agreements, maintenance schedules, and all other equipment.
  • Works with IT staff services to establish and maintain vendor relationships in support of these items.
  • Performs all work in a manner which is compliant with policies and procedures at CDU.
  • Other duties as required.
