About The Position

This position is designed to be an ambassador for the Aquarium through a variety of on-site and off-site educational programs. Duties include teaching curriculum-based school programs, participating in offsite outreaches, instructing camp sessions and engaging with guests. The main duties of this position will be teaching school programs, outreach programs and camp programs. In addition to responsibilities listed above, this position will have a focus on working with the Lead Education Program Instructors to plan and create programming.

Requirements

  • Preferred knowledge of SC science standards.
  • Skills to provide exemplary teaching methods to K-12 students.
  • Ability to work with audiences of all ages.
  • Be flexible and adjust for the dynamic needs of an audience.
  • Organization skills to create and implement programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must be able to deliver programming to groups of 10-200 people.
  • Must be a team player and self-motivated.
  • Ability to maintain a sense of humor.
  • Must be able to handle live animals.
  • Professional image required.
  • Must have or gain a working knowledge of Aquarium exhibits and animals.
  • Ability to work early mornings and evenings as needed.
  • Ability to work weekends as needed.
  • Willingness to help with other tasks and projects needed by the Education team.
  • Bachelor of Arts or 2 years’ experience in science, interpretation, education or related field.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • First Aid, CPR, AED Training – required to either possess prior or obtain through Aquarium

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred at least one year experience in interpreter or education field.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the South Carolina Aquarium Policies.
  • Teach K-12 school programs for groups of visiting students.
  • Participate in outreach programs.
  • Serve as counselor for Aquarium camps.
  • Participate in Science at Sunset evening programs.
  • Help plan and create effective materials for various audiences (including, but not limited to school programs, outreach, camp and Science at Sunset).
  • Support virtual programming such as hospital robot and virtual program chats.
  • Deliver education programs in engaging and effective ways.
  • Relate conservation issues into information that various audiences can understand.
  • Encourage guest satisfaction and enjoyment alongside educational priorities.
  • Help the Visitor Engagement Team engage guests through shows, tours, and gallery interpretation when needed (especially during busy holidays).
  • Assist in member and community programs.
