About The Position

Education Instructor, Part-Time (Weekdays) Position Description & Job Summary: The Education Instructor presents a wide variety of programs across all science areas to school groups and informal audiences at the Greensboro Science Center. The ideal candidate is outgoing and friendly, with a strong teaching background and a science background in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, and/or engineering) and/or environmental education. This is a year-round, primarily Monday through Friday, morning position (20-28 hours per week) that also supports summer science camps and other projects and activities as needed. Working with program animals, science equipment, and technology is a part of this position. Minimum requirements are a two-year degree, preferably a four-year degree, ideally in education or science, and prior experience working in an instructional capacity (classroom or informal). The successful applicant has a demonstrated passion and aptitude for teaching, a strong interest in science, is adept at creating imaginative science learning opportunities, and enjoys working closely with people of all ages, particularly children. Candidates should also be well-organized, adaptable, comfortable speaking to groups, and have a positive, energetic, outgoing demeanor. Candidates must have excellent public communication and strong interpersonal skills. Starting rate is $12.00/hour.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an A.A. or A.S., preferably a B.S. or B.A., ideally in education or science, and prior experience working in an instructional capacity (classroom or informal).
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and pass a background check.
  • Ability to pass annual TB tests.
  • Required to walk, sit, and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors for various lengths of time under a variety of conditions, including both hot and cold temperatures, high humidity, and exposure to various plants and animals.
  • Be able to climb stairs, lift, carry, and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Safely and comfortably navigate uneven surfaces, including gravel, grass, hills, and stairs.
  • Safely use small hand tools, gardening equipment, and household and school-grade laboratory chemicals.

Responsibilities

  • Enthusiastically teach and present all required programs, including school programs, distance learning, Science On the Spot (interpretation and educational carts), and interpretive gallery talks.
  • Present programs in a variety of settings, both on and off-site, to groups of varying sizes.
  • Safely handle (after training) and present a variety of small animals ranging from small mammals to invertebrates and small reptiles, including snakes. (Note: this is not an animal keeper position.)
  • Work with designated animals in accordance with animal-handling protocols and prioritize animal welfare.
  • Create creative and engaging lessons and activities.
  • Maintain excellent communication and work effectively with the public and with staff members of all ages and positions across all departments.
  • Positively interact with children and adults of all ages and abilities in small or large-group settings.
  • Utilize and operate appropriate technology such as two-way radios, phones, computers, microphones, cameras, projectors, copiers, and laminators.
  • Maintain a safe and organized working and learning environment.
  • Maintain education program supplies and materials.
  • Reliably follow a set schedule and agenda and proactively plan daily activities.
  • Dress appropriately for the day’s activities and adhere to the GSC dress code.
  • Respond to emergency situations in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Greensboro Science Center.
