About The Position

NYC Parks is transforming what was once the world’s largest landfill into a sweeping 2,200 acre park in one of the most ambitious public works projects in the history of New York City. Freshkills Park combines state-of-the-art ecological restoration techniques and research on urban ecology with extraordinary settings for recreation, public art, education and scientific research.

Requirements

  • ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT FULL-TIME ANNUALLY PAID PARKS EMPLOYEES
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Responsibilities

  • Create, facilitate, and promote programs for the general public including educational activities, kayaking, photography, birding and group/public tours.
  • Assist in administrative and organizational support for the Freshkills Park office and Freshkills Park Visitor Center.
  • Collaborate with partner agencies, organizations and community groups.
  • Assist in facility and park operations and interact with visitors.
  • Assist in organizing and conducting public/special events at Freshkills Park including races, sporting events, arts events and festivals.
  • Facilitate the development of content for blog posts/social media and other communications.
  • Assist in scheduling outreach, school trips and specialty events.
