About The Position

Youth & Family Programs make the museum accessible through NexGenLA and programming that gives children, teens, families, and adults the opportunity to make creative connections to works of art. In-person programs include: Andell Family Sundays, the Boone Children’s Gallery, off-site Community Programs, art classes, seasonal art camps, and/or outreach events. NexGenLA is the museum’s free membership program for children 17 years and younger who live in Los Angeles County. Reporting to the Manager, NexGenLA, the Education Assistant supports the Education & Public Program Department’s vision that everyone has access to art. Responsibilities include providing outstanding customer service, welcoming intergenerational audiences to the museum, inviting LA County youth to join the museum’s free youth membership program, engaging with program participants of all ages in art making activities and classes, and issuing museum entrance tickets to NexGenLA members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in a high volume and customer service focused setting
  • Working knowledge of art-making skills, art history, arts education, or museum education
  • Must operate with attention to detail, creativity, excellent problem solving skills, self-motivation, and strong organizational skills, while managing a continuous workflow
  • Strong skills in ticketing software, preferably in Tessitura
  • Basic math skills
  • Comfortable working both collaboratively and independently
  • Open availability, including holidays, evenings, weekdays, and weekends

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred, but not required, fluency in other languages besides English

Responsibilities

  • Actively demonstrates a guest-first attitude (positive and friendly) by exemplifying excellent internal and external guest service skills at all times with all ages, especially kids, families, and older adults
  • Welcome visitors, answer questions, and provide information about the museum, programs, and exhibitions
  • Actively promote and enroll parents, guardians, and families who visit and live in Los Angeles County into the NexGenLA membership program
  • Operate a computer, Google suite, and Tessitura (training provided) member database software, while maintaining a strict attention to accuracy
  • Assist Teaching Artists and Youth & Family Programs staff with youth and family programs, community programs, and outreach events: preparation, set up, art workshop support, clean up, and breakdown. This includes the museum’s off-site locations in South LA, MacArthur Park, and Pomona.
  • Maintain a conversational knowledge of LACMA’s general policies and procedures and the exhibition and programming schedule
  • Share factual, educational, and necessary information with colleagues, visitors and members via excellent written and verbal communications
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance; Practice good time management skills
  • Attend trainings and meetings, as needed
  • Escalate any guest service issues, complaints, or unanswerable questions to the Manager, NexGenLA
  • Ability to work outdoors and willingness to work in various weather conditions
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and move, lift, bend, and carry materials over 25 lbs.
  • Assist other department staff with programs, as needed
  • Duties, responsibilities and activities may change or new ones may be assigned at any time.

Benefits

  • The expected hourly pay for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $20.00. Subject to change.
