About The Position

The Center for Advancing Science and Technology (CAST) fuels innovation across physical sciences, engineering, education, and policy to advance the nation’s future prosperity and resilience. Our work prepares and supports the U.S. workforce to strengthen American competitiveness and security. The Editorial Projects Coordinator for CAST, plans, coordinates, and implements editorial and publication projects while consulting with staff and serving as liaison to all parties concerned. Ensures products conform to organization’s standards for appearance and content. If in a supervisory role, has full responsibility for supervision of assigned editorial staff. Oversees all aspects of assigned area of responsibility. Working under general supervision, incumbent applies general professional knowledge to solve problems requiring the identification and analysis of various factors and uses independent judgment and discretion to recommend best course of action. Incumbent proceeds on own initiative in compliance with policies, procedures, and practices, but receives guidance or expertise from supervisor or higher-level staff when needed. May supervise editorial support employees or serve in a lead capacity.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field, or equivalent knowledge.
  • Two years of related professional experience, plus one year of supervisory experience if in a supervisory role.
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates coordination meetings.
  • Consults with staff about the progress of reports and other materials.
  • Assists staff in deciding which products and services they need to publish reports or other materials.
  • Participates in staff meetings to discuss and coordinate services with other departments.
  • Monitors the editorial/publishing process, including organizing meetings, gathering and analyzing information, and keeping projects on time and within budget.
  • Monitors and tracks the schedule and budgets for projects.
  • Provides advance warning if any deviations are anticipated.
  • Ensures that vendors comply with contract terms and conditions.
  • If in a supervisory role, provides leadership and mentors staff.
  • Assigns work to freelance copyeditors.
  • Leads and schedules team meetings.
  • Trains and develops employees to successfully perform current responsibilities and encourages development of staff for future roles.
  • Forms effective teams and cultivates a work environment that fosters teamwork.
  • Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies.
  • Initiates personnel actions, including performance and compensation reviews and disciplinary actions.
  • Submits cover requests to the graphics department.
  • Hires freelance proofreaders, copy editors, and indexers.
  • Reviews and proofreads indexes, page proofs, and bluelines.
  • Requests, reviews, and submits productions schedules.
  • Reviews and submits cost estimates for service jobs.
  • Assist in the development of publication plans for reports and other materials marketed for focused and/or broad audiences.
  • Expresses effectively and concisely complex technical information in various written forms, including status reports, project summaries, and detailed reports.
  • Monitors and updates information in the computer tracking system.
  • Compiles statistics and trends data.
  • Answers routine and non-routine publication questions.
  • Troubleshoots problems and escalates to manager, as appropriate.
  • May serve as backup to manager in manager’s absence.
  • Other duties as assigned.
