About The Position

Join the conservation team at The Wilds and play a hands-on role in the recovery of one of North America’s most unique and imperiled amphibians—the Eastern hellbender. This position works closely with the Director of Ecology to support the hellbender head start program through daily animal care, habitat system management, fieldwork, research, and public education. Ideal for a detail oriented and mission driven professional, this role contributes directly to species conservation while supporting the broader mission of the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks and The Wilds.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; at least three (3) years completed toward a bachelor’s degree in zoology, animal science, biology, or a related field preferred.
  • Aquatic life support or aquarium experience required.
  • Experience with the care and husbandry of aquatic species required.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and complete work efficiently and cost‑effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service and positively engage with visitors while upholding organizational standards.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with team members and external contacts.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures, including all safety protocols.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record required.
  • Ability to comply with the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks’ drug‑free workplace policy, including pre‑employment, random, post‑accident, reasonable suspicion, and follow‑up testing.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using analytical or data software such as Excel, ArcGIS, and/or R preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director of Ecology to implement the Eastern hellbender head‑start program.
  • Assist with hellbender husbandry, egg collection, and field monitoring.
  • Perform daily hellbender care and support animal health and welfare.
  • Provide input to the Director of Ecology on assigned program areas, including animal husbandry and safety considerations.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and operational readiness of the Hellbender Center.
  • Complete daily record keeping and maintain accurate data associated with the program.
  • Support research and documentation efforts related to conservation and head‑start outcomes.
  • Provide educational information about the hellbender head‑start program to the public as needed.
  • Provide leadership and daily work direction to interns, apprentices, and volunteers involved with the hellbender program.
  • Communicate concerns or issues to leadership and support a positive team environment.
  • Attend departmental meetings and participate in required seminars and workshops.
  • Assure the safety of self, co‑workers, and visitors by following safety guidelines when working with equipment and vehicles.
  • Implement sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Support and promote the mission of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club, and The Wilds.
  • Performs additional duties and supports activities directly related to the hellbender head‑start program, conservation research, facility operations, and departmental needs, as assigned.
