An Earthwork Operator is responsible for operating heavy construction equipment to perform grading, excavation, and material placement in accordance with project specifications. This position requires skill, precision, and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity on construction or rail/industrial job sites. Responsible for operating heavy equipment to support rail track construction projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Minimum 2-4 years of experience operating heavy grading equipment
  • Proven ability to operate equipment safely and accurately
  • Knowledge of construction site safety practices and regulations
  • Ability to read and understand grade stakes, plans, and drawings
  • Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship
  • Skilled operation of heavy equipment
  • Strong hand-eye coordination and depth perception
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions
  • Strong safety awareness and judgment
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with the typical problems that occur in track construction.
  • Certification required if operating on track controlled by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with rail construction equipment a plus.
  • A CDL would be a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment such as motor graders, bulldozers, loaders, excavators, and other grading equipment safely and efficiently
  • Perform fine and rough grading according to plans, specifications, and supervisor direction
  • Read and interpret grade stakes, blueprints, and job specifications
  • Maintain proper slopes, drainage, and elevations
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and complete required documentation
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance (lubrication, cleaning, minor adjustments)
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, ground personnel, and other operators
  • Follow all company policies, OSHA regulations, and site-specific safety requirements
  • Identify hazards and report unsafe conditions immediately
  • Assist with other job site duties as assigned when not operating equipment
