About The Position

WSP is currently seeking an Early Career Environmental Scientist or to join our Environmental Compliance Team out of our Durham, NC office. This entry-level opportunity provides a pathway to gain knowledge and experience on a range of compliance related projects led by a team of environmental professionals with decades of experience. This environmental compliance team provides opportunities for mentorship and career growth. We are looking for a person who will maintain accurate and professional quality deliveries on tight deadlines with moderate supervision and guidance. Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the development of processes and infrastructure relating to water supply, hazardous or solid waste disposal, air emission sources, pollution control, and preserving the quality of the environment by averting the contamination and degradation of air, water, and land resources. Generates accurate and concise documentation, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science or related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products.
  • Proficiency in using ArcGIS.
  • Analytical skills, and familiarity with research techniques, local/regional ecology and habitats, and applicable species/discipline.
  • Familiar with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • Must pass drug test, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with WSP's driving (MVR) policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of industry-standard environmental compliance practices and record-keeping requirements.
  • Prior internship or related experience in environmental science or engineering.
  • A member of and/or active participant in local professional practice organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Support air quality environmental compliance-related projects, including gathering field data from job sites through personnel interviews, records review, and direct measurement.
  • Maintain established quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebook.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures.
  • Conduct scientific and engineering calculations, analyze and interpret technical data, and create clear, concise reports and presentations using multiple different software programs.
  • Provide technical memorandums and reports satisfying environmental compliance requirements for state, local, and federal regulations.
  • Offer organizational support to Durham office staff in a range of in-office tasks, which may include reviewing compliance requirements, preparing project documentation, and preparation for field work.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct, policies, and procedures.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks to develop expertise.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
