The Drug and Alcohol Counselor is responsible for developing and facilitating the Center’s alcohol, drug, and tobacco prevention program. This role involves educating and counseling students to reduce and prevent drug-related separations from the program, as well as developing individualized case management plans to enhance student retention and success. The counselor ensures confidentiality of sensitive information and compliance with all HIPAA laws, and follows integrity guidelines to prevent manipulation of student data. Key duties include developing and implementing prevention activities, coordinating community resources for substance use education, and administering the Center’s drug testing program. The counselor provides comprehensive and individualized case management, establishes supportive/mentoring relationships with students, and offers individual and group counseling on substance abuse. The position requires producing quality work, maintaining attendance and productivity standards, planning and prioritizing assignments, and continuously developing job skills. The counselor is expected to mentor and model Career Success Standards, show respect to students while holding them accountable, and ensure the quality of programs and services. Effective communication, problem-solving, and collaboration with other departments are also essential. The counselor accepts direction and supervision from the Center Director, Center Duty Officer, or Shift Manager, including temporary assignments to other departments.
