Upper Darby Township is currently hiring a Driver to support the Sanitation Division within the Public Works Department. This essential position plays a key role in protecting public health and maintaining the cleanliness of our neighborhoods through the safe and efficient collection of solid waste and recyclable materials. As a Sanitation Driver, you will be responsible for operating a Township-owned waste collection truck and its mechanical packing and dumping mechanisms. Daily responsibilities include performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections, operating hydraulic loading and compacting equipment, transporting refuse and recyclables to designated disposal areas, and maintaining accurate daily equipment and route records. The position also involves leading a small crew of laborers, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, cleaning around dumpsters and refuse containers as needed, reporting ordinance violations to a supervisor, and maintaining the cleanliness and serviceability of assigned vehicles and equipment. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, strong safety awareness, and pride in maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of Upper Darby Township's streets and alleys. This role requires knowledge of traffic laws, safe equipment operation practices, occupational hazards, and the geography of Upper Darby Township. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively, follow and relay oral and written instructions, and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public. The position involves year-round outdoor work and regular exposure to varying weather conditions. Qualified applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent, a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean Motor Vehicle Record, and at least one year of heavy equipment driving experience. Candidates must be able to read and interpret street maps and demonstrate familiarity with Township streets and alleys. Preference will be given to applicants with two or more years of heavy equipment driving experience. This position requires the ability to lift and carry 25 to 40 pounds on a daily basis; climb into and out of the truck cab using steps and handholds; operate hand and foot controls repeatedly throughout the workday; walk up to three miles per day; and climb on and off the rear of the truck numerous times daily. Applicants must be able to safely operate large vehicles in residential and confined areas and maintain consistent attendance and punctuality standards.
