About The Position

The Department of Transportation is actively looking to hire a Driver License Examiner, a vital role within PennDOT that significantly contributes to enhancing highway safety. This position involves administering standardized tests to assess the skills and competencies of applicants seeking non-commercial driver licenses. In addition to conducting these essential evaluations, the Driver License Examiner will also engage with customers at the Driver License Center, where a key responsibility includes scrutinizing identity documents to prevent identity theft and fraud. This multifaceted role not only ensures that only qualified individuals receive their licenses but also plays a crucial part in maintaining the integrity of the licensing process. In this position, you will assess the physical and driving qualifications of applicants, as well as evaluate the mechanical condition of vehicles to ensure they meet the established safety standards for driving. You will conduct various vision tests, including telebinocular and color perception assessments, to gauge applicants' visual capabilities. Additionally, you will administer both non-commercial and commercial driver license knowledge examinations to verify that individuals possess a solid understanding of the Vehicle Code and traffic signage. Your responsibilities will also include conducting pre-trip, skills, and driving tests for non-commercial licenses in accordance with departmental guidelines, while scrutinizing applications, registrations, and permits for any signs of irregularities or fraudulent activity. You will determine the specific characteristics of vehicles to ensure that the appropriate tests are administered and will inspect motor vehicles for compliance with safety features such as inspection stickers, lights, and windshield wipers. Furthermore, you will review various documents, including applications, birth certificates, Social Security cards, marriage certificates, court documents, proof of residency, and immigration-related documents, to verify their authenticity. Utilizing multiple systems and databases, you will authenticate identity documents to establish an individual's identity and eligibility for a driver's license or identification card. Your role will also involve identifying potential fraud and preventing the creation of false identities and identity theft. You will process test results and applications, issuing driver licenses and identification cards to qualified applicants. Additionally, you will provide customers with essential information regarding driver's license renewals, duplicates, out-of-state transfers, motorcycle licenses, and the requirements for obtaining and maintaining a commercial driver's license, including knowledge of various restrictions and endorsements. Upon request, you will generate Restoration Requirements Letters for customers who appear in person, ensuring clear communication of relevant information related to their inquiries. Requirements

  • One year of experience as a Driver License Examiner Assistant (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of experience obtaining, evaluating, and providing information to the public.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent and twenty-one years of age at the time of application.
  • This position requires no suspensions or revocations of a driver's license during the five year period immediately preceding employment.
  • All employees in this job hired after February 28, 2022, are required to obtain an active unrestricted Class M driver's license within the first six months of employment or before the end of the probationary period and maintain it during employment.
  • This position requires possession of an active Class A Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the following endorsements: P and N. The Commercial Driver License cannot have any of the following restrictions: E, L, N, O, or Z.
